Gear ratio question(4 posts)

Gear ratio questionPsychler

I am running an 8sp system...Sram 9.0sl and XTR rear cassette (12-32), 36 middle and 24 small (no big ring)....110 spacing, 5 bolt
I need new rings and cassette.
I may only be able to get the 11-30 XTR ti rear cassette, thus losing my lower gear (32) (which I use)....
What would I have to do to the front middle and small rings to get the same ratios with nice smooth transitions?

To determine what ratio's you now have, divide the chainring by the cassette for each combination possible. I do this in excel to make a list. Now do the same for your next setup and you can compare the steps and spacing of the different setups.

...would give you a slightly lower low — approximately equivalent to a 24/33 (for comparison's sake).

how about a 28/38 with an 11-32 SRAM 8 spd cassette?

You should be able to find some old-school (ie cheap) rings in a 28 and 38 size. Maybe check with cambriabike.com or have your local shop check the quality bike catalogue.
