the center of the chainring bolt holes, i.e. Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD). There is also a nifty chart in the Nashbar catalog. Or you can figure it out by what size cranks you have...

5-Bolt
Compact — 94mm/58mm
Standard — 110mm/74mm

4-Bolt
Compact — 104mm/58mm
Standard (XTR) — 112mm/68mm

Most cranks are compact with chainrings typically sized 22T/32T/44T. Standard cranks have larger chainrings like 24T/34T/46T or larger.
