| 2x9 & my front derailleur ... help setting up | scc Oct 16, 2001 6:58 AM | | I have an XT '96 thumb shifter pod (on purpose! used to visually ID the position I'm in, allow for fine tuning of the fron der. and it is 30gms lighter) set to my '01 XT front derailleur and ISIS Truvativ Stylo Team 2x9 32/44 cranks and 12-34 9 sp XTR cassette, as well as a XTR right rapidfire shifter pod (no OGD). I did not adjust the chainline because I want the 32 ring to have the optimum position (in the middle) and I dont need to use the 44/34.
I want to set the front derailler to only shift in two positions to the 44 and 32 rings and not to the now removed 22 ring granny. Can I set the limits of my front derailleur to only allow these two positions and not "overshift" into the removed 22 ring?
Thanks!!

| several things... | scrappy-doo Oct 16, 2001 7:23 AM | | several things: 1. You really do want to pull your cranks closer (shorter bb)the idea is to place the middle ring in between where your granny and middle used to be. You will be using both your rings with the full casette range (hey, when you are getting crazy out there, you dont want to worry about the big/big cross) With the closer bb, you will be able to use big/big all day long. cannondale does this with their 2x9's with tremendous success. As it is now, the big ring is not in the "optimal spot" nor is the middle in the optimal spot, since it needs to accomidate the granny (which is now gone) 2. Setting the front derail is just like on a any MTB. put your shifter in first gear (used to be granny) Put the bike in the small ring in front, big cog in back (hope you gotta 34!) and set cage so it almost touches the chain - maybe a mm away. Make sure the cage is paralell to the big ring and just clears the big ring. You wont need to "fine tune" the front derail at all if its set up correctly AND you use a shorter BB as I STRONGLY suggest. 3. Maybe try to locate a 30t small ring instead of the 32. I run a 29 and even with the 34t rear, it does get real old on occasion. You cant ever just chill up a hill. knowhatimsayin? you are always mashing with the 32t small ring. Quality makes a nice 30t ring - no ramps and pins either. 4. If your ring is ramped and pinned (normal 32 rings are) you REALLY should shorten up your BB. You will find your chain drops more than it used to. Dont ask me why, I really cant figure it out. I really suggest a non-ramped 32t or 30t ring. maybe look for a singlespeed ring or just a regular ring from QBP (quality) 5. Your shifter will shift from 1-2 but not to 3 (big ring) on the indicator of the shifter. This is how it is supposed to work. You may find your old-school XT shifter is not too comportable to shift since you will be using the (old) granny position of the lever. Maybe get yourself a normal shifter pod, suck up the 30 grams (just take a piss before you ride to make up for it) and have a much better system. 6. Again, you WILL NOT need to "fine tune" or "trim" the front derail. with the 2x9 so long as you use a shorter BB 107 instead of 113 for example. or 109.5 (dura-ace) instead of 116 in the case of XTR. this will allow the use of the normal indexing front shifter. Ive done this conversion for literally about 10 bikes - Im speaking the gospel hear. good luck. |
| yes | club Oct 16, 2001 11:40 AM | | just crank in the low limit screw til the cage stops where you want it to. Then you should take up the slack in the cable by loosening the binder bolt at the derailleur and pulling the cable taught. Then retighten. |
| I had 2x8 for a couple years... | Metroid Oct 16, 2001 11:41 AM | | At first it was because my front derailleur wasn't adjusted and wouldn't drop into granny. After a while I decided to simplify and intensionally tune it out. First, I cranked down on the lower limit screw all the way. This set the first position on the front shifter to the middle ring and the second position to the big ring. Then I tuned the top gear out. Worked fine for me. |
