Shift cable for rear derailleur always breaks at where you attach the cable to the derailleur. Last only one to two month's before failure.

good quality stainless steel or teflon coated cables. Next, sounds like your cranking down the bolt too hard. There is a torque spec for that clamp on both shimano and SRAM derailleurs, and it's not very heavy, only about 50 or 60 lb/in. If you clamp the cable down too tight it can deform the individual strands or it can actually start to cut into the cable. Then it's just a matter of time before the strands all break. From what little information you gave, that's all I can come up with. You don't have to mash the cable to keep it in place.

...make sure that the cable isn't getting pinched between the little tab on the washer and the derailleur body. That'll cut it in a hurry. There might also be a sharp edge on that washer.
