| Shifting cable always breaking | mountainbiker2 Oct 16, 2001 3:58 PM | | Shift cable for rear derailleur always breaks at where you attach the cable to the derailleur. Last only one to two month's before failure. |
| First make sure that you are getting... | Squash Oct 16, 2001 4:26 PM | | good quality stainless steel or teflon coated cables. Next, sounds like your cranking down the bolt too hard. There is a torque spec for that clamp on both shimano and SRAM derailleurs, and it's not very heavy, only about 50 or 60 lb/in. If you clamp the cable down too tight it can deform the individual strands or it can actually start to cut into the cable. Then it's just a matter of time before the strands all break. From what little information you gave, that's all I can come up with. You don't have to mash the cable to keep it in place.

| also..... | heff® Oct 16, 2001 4:39 PM | | ...make sure that the cable isn't getting pinched between the little tab on the washer and the derailleur body. That'll cut it in a hurry. There might also be a sharp edge on that washer.
