XTR front derailleur was designed to work with larger chainrings on XTR cranks. It will still work with compact but isn't ideal. The XT is much less expensive and optimized for compact cranks. These days, most cranks are compact with chainrings typically sized 22T/32T/44T. Standard cranks are much less common and have larger chainrings like 24T/34T/46T or larger. Here is a chart with the common Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) patterns ...

5-Bolt
Compact — 94mm/58mm
Standard — 110mm/74mm

4-Bolt
Compact (TruVativ) — 104mm/64mm
Standard (XTR) — 112mm/68mm

With the smaller diameter bolt pattern, compact rings can come in larger sizes more typical of standard cranks, e.g. 34T or 46T in a 94mm BCD is possible. Standard rings are pretty much limited in there sizes to a 24T granny and a 34T middle ring, e.g. 32T will NOT fit on a 110mm bolt pattern.

I hope I didn't confuse you too much but it's kind of hard to explain that the standard crankset that comes on most bikes is NOT "standard" but compact.
thanks mate! nmjamis
