...a two-piece unit, that replaces (or comes with some higher-end cranks) your standard crankarm bolt and dustcap.

The bolt threads into your bottom bracket as usual, but has a ledge on it. The dustcap is replaced by a threaded piece that you install over the TOP of the bolt. Now, when you use your 8mm wrench to remove your crank bolt, instead of then needing a crankarm puller, that dustcap bottoms out against the bolt and pulls the cranks off as the bolt comes out.

Nifty, but not necessary.....most folks should have a crank puller around anyway.

This spring I had a horrible case of chain suck that brought my chain up past the stays. I tried for several minutes to get it back where it belonged, but couldn't do it without bending the crap out of the chain and scatching the frame more than all ready had been done. Then it occured to me that I not only had self-extracting cranks, but a splined BB which does not deform when you reinstall cranks. Out came the tools, off came the cranks, and I was riding in about 5 minutes.

I'm yet to see anyone riding with a crank puller. I was really glad not to be walking the 5+ miles back to the car.
