Shimano XT Rear Derailleur on 8 Speed drive train(5 posts)

Shimano XT Rear Derailleur on 8 Speed drive trainTequila Joe

A newbie question...

I bent my Deore Rear Derailleur yesterday. I've bent it back into shape and it seems to work albiet a bit noisier now. I was thinking of replacing it. My LBS has a Shimano XT - RD-M750-SGS for $50. Will this work on my 8 Speed drive train? It says 9 Speed on the Shimano site. I have a 11-30T cassette if that makes any difference.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Does the performance of the XT warrant the extra 20 bucks over just getting another Deore?
That will work fine....Roy

with your 8 speed drivetrain. As for your question whether it is worth $20 more than the Deore, I'm not sure. The XT will be lighter and probably shift smoother but I'd guess not dramatically so. Ultimately it depends on how much you ride, how you ride, etc...
One thing to consider is the LX derailleur, which should only be around $4-5 more than the Deore and it is probably yet even closer to the XT's performance.
Thanks Roy and ... HAPPY NEW YEAR!Tequila Joe
