| 2003 XTR crankset on hardtail frame problems | Neil Jan 1, 2004 6:03 AM | | Anyone had problems with this crankset? I can't seem to get a good line with it and some people said it was designed around a f/s rig.
I have used the recommended # of spacers for 68mm shell in various postions left and right. Chain either drops off, or can't shift into large ring properly. I have tweaked front der. over with no success.
Any help would be great!! |

I have an 03 XTR drivetrain on my Yo Eddy..... absolutely no problems
I realise this is not an answer :-(
Get your LBS to check it over? |

Both those front derailleurs are listed as having a 50mm chainline, which matches the claimed 50 mm chainline of the 2003 XTR (and also the 2004 XT)cranksets. |
| re: 2003 XTR crankset on hardtail frame problems | sclyde2 Jan 7, 2004 7:19 PM | | I have exactly the same problem as you have on my Ellsworth FS. the work-around solution was to set up the limit on the f/der so that I could "over-shift" to get it up to the big ring. hardly what i should be putting up with for the price i paid for that drivetrain. i've had the chain go off the big ring side during a race once, and ended up twisting the chain completely out of shape. was not happy.
from what i've read, 47.5mm is ideal for 9sp, given normal hub spacing. 50mm is simply too wide, and I don't know why shimano has done it this way. I have heard you can get a 47.5mm chainline using '03 XT Cranks and I think that's what i'm going to do. i've put up with crappy shifting for over 6 months, and I'm over it. dunno what i'm going to do with the XTR crank, maybe try it on my c'dale hardtail (i don't expect it to be much better). '03 XT (or '04 RF) crank and SRAM rear shifting for me.
i haven't heard of f/ders being specified with particular chainlines, like suggested below. can anyone shed light on this?
btw, i'm using a PC99 SRAM chain. everything else on the drivetrain is XTR '03 (crap). my 2x9 c'dale shifts much better, and the crank has about 15,000km on it (original rings still). |
