| What chain to use? | Danielpj Jan 4, 2004 5:58 AM | | Here's my new set-up:
2003 Truvativ Stylo Team Crankset
Old-School XTR 8sp cassette
XTR Mega 9 rear der.
SRAM PC-58 8sp Chain
Truvativ says to use an IG chain is your using 8 sp. SRAM says the PC58 is IG compatible. But I can not get my drivetrain tuned. Would switching to a Dura ace chain help, or should I try the cheaper IG90? |
| With an 8spd cassette, you need an 8 spd chain.... | Lucky Jan 4, 2004 8:33 AM | | and I don't know if Shimano still makes an 8 spd Dura-Ace chain. The SRAM PC-58 should work fine. From your list of parts, I don't see an obvious problem, unless that old-school XTR cassette is worn out, or the chain is worn. You don't say whether or not these things are new. I'm going to guess your '03 crank isn't worn out yet, but if the rear der or hanger has been tweaked in a crash, that could mess things up, too.
Also, if you just installed everthing new, make sure all the housing sections are of adequate length and all the ferrules are seated firmly. I once cut the piece of housing that goes into the rear derailleur a mm or two too short. It looked okay, but wouldn't shift quite right, no matter what I did.
Good luck!

| Bzzzzt, wrongo | pedalAZ Jan 4, 2004 12:01 PM | | 9 speed chains work fine with 8 speed drive trains. I have used 3 different sets of rings and three different 8 speed cassettes on my bike with SRAM PC69's, PC99's and most recently with the new KMC X9 chain. All work fine on the 8 speed cassette. Derailleur for all those setups was a SRAM9.0SL. |
| Agreed, couple years of using a PC59 on an XT 8 speed cassette.. | f'nætik (aka næstep) Jan 4, 2004 1:15 PM | | ...and shifting was crisp and flawless with no unusual wear, and no chain failures. |
| I'd heard they were too narrow. | Lucky Jan 5, 2004 5:01 PM | | Ya' learn somethin' new everyday.

| difference is ,2mm in width... | DeeEight Jan 8, 2004 2:11 AM | | which isn't enough to notice. Some manufacturers suggest running 8 speed chains with their 9 speed cogsets in fact (ActionTec for example with their Ti cassettes). |
| re: What chain to use? | Nab Jan 4, 2004 9:33 AM | | Kathy has it right. I have a 7 speed at the back and mega 9 crank and i use a 7 speed chain. Both chain and cassettes are HG70. It works fine. |
| It's not the chain... | Homebrew Jan 5, 2004 7:19 AM | | I'm not sure where exactly you are having trouble but I would bet it's not the chain that causing trouble. From your list, the only compatability issue I see is the front derailleur. The XTR front derailleur is designed to work with larger standard chainrings so probably isn't the best choice with your TruVativ cranks. I would look for an 8 speed XT front derailleur. Check eBay. |
| It's not the chain... | Nab Jan 5, 2004 1:25 PM | | I use an old 7 speed STX front derailleur with my XT mega 9 crank. No problem. I think it's a matter of tuning both derailleurs right and make sure the chainline is good. It took 30mins before i was satisfied with the shifting. |
| should work fine, but... | wrenchmonkey Jan 8, 2004 6:39 PM | | the gear should work fine even with the mix of 8 and 9 spd gear. check the chain line, is it ok? (especially if you've put on new cranks and/or bb. is the r-der or der hanger bent, sticky links in chain from joining it? could be a million things but these are the most common. |
