| Why is my new cassette loose? | troy Jan 5, 2004 10:49 AM | | I bought a new chain, cassette and middle ring recently and finally got around to installing them over the holiday. This is not the first time I've done this but it is the first time I've run into a problem.
The rear hub is a King ISO disc and the cassette is an XT. The top 6 gears on the cassette are fused together and the bottom 3 are loose. No problems there and I installed everything without a hitch. However, the top 2/3 of the cassette have about an 1/8 - 1/4 inch of play even when tightened down appropriately. They only slide onto the hub one way due to the splines but even when installed correctly and tightened down they move front to back just enough to worry me. The bottom 3 gears are fine and don't move at all. The play is only front to back, not side to side and can't be fixed by tightening the cassette any further.
If you shift up into one of the top 6 gears the cassette is held tight by the pressure from the rear D and the chain. Once you get the chain down to the bottom of the cassette however you can hear the top 6 rattling.
Am I missing something obvious here? I didn't have this problem with the last XT cassette on the same hub so I'm not sure what's going on. |
| You don't mention installing the thin shim... | fred³ Jan 5, 2004 12:12 PM | | Did you? |
| If it didn't come in the box (which I don't think it did) .... | troy Jan 5, 2004 2:25 PM | | I didn't install it. Where does the shim go? |
| Without taking my | fred³ Jan 5, 2004 2:40 PM | | xt 9 speed cassette apart I couldn't be more precise than that it goes between one of the loose cogs. I don't believe I got one with my new cassette, but I just transfered it over when I changed them out and it worked fine. Maybe this is your problem. Try your lbs if you don't have one. Shouldn't cost much. |
| shim, schmim... | alibi Jan 5, 2004 3:29 PM | | You are not missing any shims; not sure what fred is talking about, but if I am reading your post right, the cassette has play in it's rotational direction, not left/right as would be the case if a spacer were needed.
Can't imagine what the problem is; maybe compare the old one to the new. It would have to be something with the splines. Is the 6 cog cluster tight as a unit when off the hub? |
| shim, schmim... | troy Jan 5, 2004 3:48 PM | | Correct. Play is in it's rotational direction.
Yes, 6 clog cluster is tight when off the hub.
I too was confused by Fred cubed. Seems like they would include all of the necessary pieces if a shim was needed. Splines on the hub are fine also. |
| try this | thebronze Jan 5, 2004 10:22 PM | | Troy, I had the same problem after replacing a rear wheel and putting my xt cassette back on. Its the same as yours, I think, something like 3 or 4 loose cogs, the rest on a spider.
Noticed the problem when first riding it, I think the chain would slip off the cogs under load. I put the bike on the stand and grabbed the cassette with a rag. I could wiggle it back and forth just a bit, so I knew something was off.
I took off the wheel and removed the cassette. Everything looked fine so I reassembled and made sure the splines lined up and the gear labels too. Put it back on the freewheel and made sure it was good and tight. Tried to wiggle it again and it wouldnt budge. I think the play was caused by the cogs not being aligned or placed just right.
Try taking it apart and reassembling it, making sure all the cogs are lined up and nice and snug. Also push the cassette down onto the hub a little before torquing the lock ring on so its nice and snug. I also run the lockring backwards until the click, then screw it in so you get the threads perfect, then torque the hell outta it.
BTW my cassette had no spacer, all the cogs had teeth. |
| Washer then... | fred³ Jan 6, 2004 8:07 AM | | but there is a thin piece of circular metal that goes on when assmebling the xt cassette onto the freehub. |
