Thumbies/barcons??SDMike

Hey, I have an older pair of thumbies that I'm contemplating trying to convert to 9sp barcons.

Anyone ever tried this?

Did it work?

if they're old thumbies, they're not going to index with 9 cogs, so you must be talking about friction?
what you proposing? mounting thumbies at the ends of drop bars? firstly, mtb bars and drop bars have different diameters, so no guarantee the thumbie clamps will even go on the drops, at least not without forcing the issue.
if you're itching to make some bar-cons, check out rivendell bicycles online. they have the pods that go into the bar's ends, and you can then add any old road downtube shifter levers to them to make your own. if you had 9 sp. dura-ace down tube shifters, you could make 9 sp. bar-cons. Or you could buy 9 sp. shimano bar-cons and save the thumbies for what they were intended for.

If those thumbies are in working order I have a buyer for you. A buddy of mine is a retro grouch and would love to have another set.

Sell 'em and buy barcons.

I have the barcons. I'm trying to avoid calling Paul's and ordering up their $50 barcon to thumbie converters.

I also have an older pair of thumbies that look like the bottom of the shifter may be similar to the barcon.

I have the thumbies on my mtn bike at the moment and don't want to disassemble them just to see what the bottom of the shifter looks like... Large PITA factor y'know.

Just FYI for you 'crossers. I hear that Paul's went and made a run of 26.0 road bar compatible thumbie mounts. Get em while they're hot!

So, no one's gone and taken their thumbies apart, huh?

which is not to say that they can't be made to work together, but roadie stuff stays put by fitting over a square boss, while my XT thumbies use 4 little pins to hold onto the mounts. The suntour XC-pros are pretty similar to the XTs, too.

Hope that helps,

Check Bikeman too...JmZ

Bikeman (www.bikeman.com) has 'em off their home page too. Just about the same price, so shipping may be actually cheaper than from Paul direct (go figure).

Bikeman should be able to get the bar-cons for ya at the same time (if needed).
