8/9sp hybrid(1 post)

I havn't been watching this particular board much, so forgive me if this is a somewhat commonly known bit of info...

I was trying to set up a set of 7sp XT thumbies with an 8sp cassette and was inexplicably having problems getting the shifting right (the shifters were pulling a hair too much cable (?)). Anyway, just on a whim, i put the deore 9sp rapidfire shifters back on just to see if i could get them to work with the LX 9sp der. and sram 5.0 cassette (8sp) with connex chain (also 8sp). Sure 'nuff, worked first time! All you have to do is increase the effective cable pull/ratio (whatever you want to call it) on the derailleur by pinching the cable outboard of the binder bolt, rather than the "recommended" inboard location. I've used this trick on a variety of bikes with mixed components, and once again, it proves effective.
Admittedly, it isn't absolute butter, but i think my cables are a wee bit sticky, and i am running a fairly cross-platform setup. It does, however, hit every gear just fine, and will suit my needs of surviving some nasty mud riding.

Hope that is of some help to someone...

-Damon
