Fonseca, others. Has anyone re riveted a R-Derailler? (4 posts)
| Fonseca, others. Has anyone re riveted a R-Derailler? | Mr Magoo Jan 6, 2004 6:58 AM | | This was suggested on my SRAM post which is way down the page by now.
In my box of broken parts, I now have the potential to merge 2 broken SRAM 9.0 rear deraillers by replacing the snapped off first knuckle with a good knuckle from a unit that snapped at the long cage pivot. Or vice versa, I guess. Has anyone bothered to try this? I can see drilling out the rivets to remove the broken component, but reassembly must require a more sophisticated ricet than what is found in my pop rivet kit. (Which was very effective on aluminum gutters) I can see reassembling too tight or too loose. Aren't these things designed to accept lube? While I like recycling, this is a $50 part; is this process too labor/pain in the butt intensive to justify the effort? If so, why am I keeping a box of broken parts? Thanks a million for your valuable input.

I too have often wondered why I keep a box of broken/spare parts that never seem to get used...could make an interesting collage for the wall... |
| What do you need to rivet? | fonseca Jan 10, 2004 4:29 PM | | Aren't the pins all held in place with C-clips?
I have never broken a knuckle believe it or not--despite years of bending derailleur hangers--so I haven't done it myself, but when a riding buddy of mine ordered a replacement al knuckle for his, he just popped off the C-clips and it was easy.
Edit: Hmm, actually I think you are out of luck. I just looked at the only 9.0 derailleur I own, and it does indeed have rivets, all my other Sram derailleurs have C-clips. I honestly don't know if the pins and clips will work on 9.0 or not, although I'd bet they would. Maybe you should give Sram a call.
