If you are mechanically inclined, you can replace just the freehub (couple cone wrenches and a 10mm allen, assuming a shimano freehub). However, if you need a shop to replace it, after labor and all that, depending on the quality of the wheel, you might just be better off purchasing a new rear wheel. You can use the dead one to practice mechanics on...
Sometimes, the little ratchets in there get all gummy and don't engage consistently, and a simple degreasing is all you need, but that is really quite rare, and hard to clean up with out removing the freehub.
Good luck, and sorry for the bummer

If the problem has just appeared and you live in a cold climate, it could be that the freehub has frozen up; if it persists after the bike warms up, though, that's not it.
For learning purposes, go ahead and remove the freehub and degrease it. Very good instructions are here:

If overhauling the freehub doesn't do it, you can replace the freehub faily inexpensively ($10-20?), though you'll have to special order the item from your LBS (few of them stock freehubs).
Good luck. I just did an overhaul on a Bontrager freehub on my relatively new GF Big Sur, which was spinning in the cold (below 20^F). Not too difficult a job if you've got the cone wrenches and 10mm allen (11mm in my case). If you're buying tools, I'd recommend a socket wrench bit 10mm allen so you can use a torque wrench (it has to go on pretty tight). |
