Can I change Alivio E-type to Seatube Derailleur(3 posts)

Can I change Alivio E-type to Seatube DerailleurCDMC

Hi,

Question. I have a 1999 Fisher Kaitai that I want to upgrade the Alivio Cranks and front derailleur to newer LX stuff. My questions are:

1) Do I need to keep using the E-type, bottom bracket mount, front derailler, or can I use a standard top pull derailler? If I switch, how to I decide if I use a top swing or bottom swing?

2) Can I use a new LX derailler and cranks with 8 speed shifters, cassette and chain untill I change theem to nine speed?

Thanks

those wimpy flexy e type mounts were conceived for suspension bikes that don't have a seat tube at a convenient location for mounting a standard clamp-on front derailleur. Personally I think they're garbage and it's a crime that mfgrs' are specing them on bikes that don't need them. Yours is a hardtail, no? Then there should be no problem clamping a normal front derailleur to the seat tube.
Sorry not up on the newfangled bottom swing ones, maybe somebody else can answer that. Though I haven't seen a triple yet that won't work with a normal oldschool type front derailleur, which is what, top swing I guess?
Thanks. NMCDMC
