Crankset Installation?(2 posts)

Crankset Installation?JerseyRich

Got my first set of splined cranks...some '03 XT Octalinks and Im a little confused. It seems I need to find a 10mm wrench to tighten them, but does that also tighten the self extracting mechanism? There seems to be some holes on either side of the extractor, do I need a special tool to tighten them? Thanks
dunno re: shitmano octalink, but self extractors I've dealt withclub

had holes that fit the same little tool that fit some older crank dust caps. one side has the pins to fit the backside of chainring bolts, the other side fits the dust caps shitmano used to use on like the original XT and other cranks of the era. or one of those pin pliers that can be set to squeeze-open or squeeze-closed oughta work, that's a handy tool to have around for a bunch of uses.
campy's self extractor that came on the c record crank was reverse threaded, so if you removed it for normal bolts, you needed a special reverse thread crank puller. I think others are normal thread.
