XTR 5-arm spider for M950?(7 posts)

XTR 5-arm spider for M950?tmaybee
Jan 12, 2004 4:17 PM
Hi there. Can anyone tell me if the spider for the M952 will work on an M950 crankset? I found 2 different part numbers on the shimano website for the spiders so I was wondering if they are compatiable? I really need to get a spider for my M950's and I can only seem to find the M952 spiders.
Or should I go with an aftermarket spider? I see these on ebay all the time, has anyone tried one? I think I would rather have the stock XTR look though...

Thanks,

The spline for the chainring spider is the same on M950 and M952 cranks. From what I hear the shape of the crankarm may be slightly different between the M952 and M950 thus you may need to do a little filing of the spider for fittment (not much at all, a five minute job).

I have M950 and M952 cranks with avitar and shimano spiders, but have not had to do any filing, its just something that was reported to me.

5 arm compact spiders and M951/M952 crank arms and thick chainrings like Race Face/Black Spire.

There is no fit problems with a 110 spider.

I have a 94/58 compact spider, it it has not needed any filing on either the 950 or 952.

Why would ring size have anything to do with it? From what I understand, the 952 crankarm is a little beefier on the backside, and the channel on some spiders is not wide enough at the top.

I did have to do a tiny bit of filing on a kooka bashring for the crank though.

It's only the big ring...Homebrew

It's not the size of the chainring but the thickness. Race Face rings are a lot thicker (probably twice as thick) as Shimano or Sugino rings. This extra thickness combined with the small radius arms of the 5 arm compact spider can make a difficult fit under the XTR crank. The Black Spire big rings come with a little chamfer on the two arms that go under the crank. That filing you did on the bash ring is all that I'm talking about. Also, there is a little more room under the M950 than the M951/M952.
