M747 pedals???(5 posts)

M747 pedals???tmaybee

I have to remove a broken plastic lock bolt from my left pedal. I was thinking the best way to do this would be to heat up the axle (only) and melt the plastic part so I can pull it out. I was thinking of pouring cold water into it to loosten the melted plastic from the threads afterwards and brush it out with a wire brush. Has anyone tried this?

Other than that, Does anyone know where I could buy a left pedal body or a left pedal?

Perhaps a very small strap wrench, which are getting common....Bikeless Rider

...would suffice to grip the exposed part of it, provided it's clean and dry of course. I'm not sure you'd be able to get all the melted plastic out, but interesting concept. Still one of the nicest pedals BTW, I miss the 8 degree float, and they were pretty bombproof.

Melting the plastic can get ugly, and there is a cheep tool for removing that lockbolt. Check out http://www.biketoolsetc.com click tools/pedals and no I am not affiliated in any way.

As far as a replacement, I had the same situation in 97or98 and Shimano pit crew gave me a new pedal at the snow shoe race. An actual shimano warranty. Try ebay or place a wtb ad as many of us have old 747/737/535 chasis's lying around. Sorry all of mine are still working like day one.
Best of luck
He no doubt has one, as they come with the pedals. Had one...Bikeless Rider

...of my plastic nuts crack once, and that tool can be difficult to remove them with depending on how badly the piece is broken. Rather than send me a new nut, Shimano sent two entire new axle assemblies.

off completely inside. The exposed part just spins freely. I was thinking of pounding something in the pedal between the plastic and the axle and tring to twist the whole thing out, but I don't think this will work. It looks like melting might be the only way but I am not sure how successfull that will be either.

I was also thinking of drilling through the axle down to the 2 cone nuts at the end. Then removing the axle and tring to remove the plastic lock bolt from the inside, but I don't think it would be worth all the effort...

Has anyone been able to remove a broken lock bolt successfully, or should I just try to pick up a left pedal to replace that one? I have a new set of ti axles with aluminum lock bolts to install.
