| Selling bikes on Ebay, good, or bad idea??Help! | Twiggy Sep 26, 2001 5:28 PM | | hey, I'm thinking about selling my bike and buying a New FS rig, but I have a strange feeling that I wont be able to sell my bike just around town, so I was considering trying to sell it on Ebay. has anyone else ever done this successfully? How much do they charge? Would you think that I would be able to get the asking price for my bike (asking around $1900 canadian) or should I expect only lower bids, or is there a chance that people might bid above that? Just wondering about the trends of ebay. A friend of mine said that cheap stuff and epensive stuff sells cheap on Ebay, that its the middle priced stuff that gets sold for more than its worth. Is this true? Anyways, if anyone has any opinions about selling bikes on Ebay I'd like to hear them, thanks!

| I did it. | grimlock Sep 26, 2001 5:49 PM | | I sold my road bike on ebay . since , like you no one would buy it from where I am . If you put it on ebay and want a certain price for it , set a reserve. It will cost you a few more bucks . but you are garunteened to get what you want then |

I don't think we "made out like bandits" but we weren't un-happy either. The cost of selling is pretty low - you can read up at the ebay website (I think it was $15 or so). Keep in mind that to get $1,900 Cdn you only need to sell it for about $1,250 US. That definitely helped us out (we're Cdn too).
Cheers!

| I've sold 2 | wc Sep 27, 2001 5:34 AM | | The first bike sold for well over the reserve and second just barely met the reserve. Bottom line, I think it had to do with the brand name. The first being a C'dale (people know the name) and the second, a Psycle Werks (most ebayers don't know the name). I think it cost me about $25 each to sell them. I sold both of them in late spring, early summer hoping everyone was getting ready to ride which may or may not make a difference.
Good luck,

| Twiggy this reply is for you | wc Sep 27, 2001 5:38 AM | | replied in the wrong spot, oh well. I wanted to add that I haven't had any problems except that the guy that bought the PW said one of the spacers on the outside of the hub was missing so I got one from my LBS and sent it to him. Personally, I thik it didn't know what was going on because I had the skewers still in the wheels so how is the spacer going to turn up missing? |
| Good idea. | woe Sep 27, 2001 9:53 AM | | I just bid on a 15 year old Mercian touring frame - I dropped out at $360 & the frame eventually went for $435+shipping. I can get the same frame, brand new, delivered to my door for $545. I'd say that qualifies as a seller's market. |
