| best helmet mount light for the $$$? | head Sep 27, 2001 5:01 AM | | who makes the best helmet mounted light that won't require a second mortgage? i plan on buying a bar mounted light to compliment the helmet mount eventualy but i need something on my head first. i can put the battery pack in my camelback so the weight isn't that big of a deal (it doesn't need to be comfy in a jersey pocket). i just want something reliable that provides good light.
suggestions?
thank you,

| How many $$$ ? | OldSchool Sep 27, 2001 6:21 AM | | I just bought a light. So, I've recently researched the different offerings. Tell me how much do you want to, and I'll let you my two cents.

| the less the better.... | head Sep 27, 2001 6:30 AM | | ...i guess i'd like to stay under $150. i'm not looking for the cheapest out there because i don't want something that's going to fall apart and frustrate me. i'll pay a little extra to get something good, but i'm not going to go out and buy a digital headtrip 2 or something like that.

| the less the better.... | OldSchool Sep 27, 2001 7:44 AM | | BikerBob has some deals. Check out:

I notice that the NiteRider Headtrip is at ~$120. It's only 10W which may not be sufficient for some trail sections though. I also believe that Performance gets their "brand" lights from Marwi.
Good luck. I've just started night riding. It's a blast. I can't believe I waited this long to get into it.
Cheers,

| BLT Blitz | Kleinadian Sep 27, 2001 7:13 AM | | The BLT Blitz is a great light for the cash. I used it at the last Harwood 24 hour, and passed 50 to 100 people or more on my night lap.
I nightride often, and it's all you need. Not even a barmount.
It comes with a 15W bulb. I use a 10W bulb to extend the life, or for winter use such as biking or XC skiing. |
| I like the BLT units as well | Gorilla Biscuits Sep 27, 2001 7:40 AM | | I use a BLT Terminator. Same light as the Blitz but has a lighter bettery pack. One light is all you need, lots of light output, nice and white with the 15w bulb. Battery lasts aboot 90 mins on a full charge, will go longer with the 10w bulb. Good value for the money, I got my Terminator for $150 CDN on sale. That translates to approx $100 US depending where you are. |
| re: best helmet mount light for the $$$? | Bonee Sep 27, 2001 8:09 AM | | I just started night riding myself too. Here is what I have found.
- At first I bought a Marwi Pro Elite dual bar light with 15w and 20w lights. Cost of about $180 including delivery charge. Quite honestly, the dual light is overkill. I notice very little difference with both lights on. Yet, I feel OK about having the dual as they are very light in weight, and if one light blows on the trail I have a back-up.
- At 15w, the Pro Elite gives 3.2 hours of burn time.
- The bar lights are fine by themselves for road riding.
- For MTB, you'll want a helmet light too. I haven't bought one yet due to my own indecision, but I know I want one. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but with all the light going in the direction of your bars, it gets a little freaky and hairy in more technical sections.
I am torn between two headlights (after much research).
- Marwi Elite. It is a 12w light with 2 hours burn time. My concern with this is the burn time. I might like some more felxibility in my riding time. But at $100 this is a great deal.
- Light and Motion Cabeza Logic. Pricey at $200 ($250 with quick Charger). However, it has three settings at 7w-4.4 hour burn, 10w 2.8 hour burn, or 13w 2 hour burn. Plus the beam can be adjusted to flood or spot. With my bar lights, I would only need the 7w most of the time to help out. Plus, if you get a flat, you'll only need a dim light to change the tube.
Sorry for the long post, it is a complex, personal choice. Right now I am leaning towards the Cabez Logic. The Marwi is excellent by all means for the price, but I like the flexibility of teh Cabeza.
marwiusa.com (buy at bikerbob.com)
bikelights.com (unsure where I will buy at. Coloradocyclist.com has the standard version for $200, or the turbo charger for $250). I doubt I will get the turbo charger. I can wait 12 hours between rides. |
| Performance Viewpoint.... | JD Sep 27, 2001 8:22 AM | | they are cheap and the warrenty is unbeatable. They don't have the multiple settings the Digital stuff does, but I've used his Veiwpoints and didn't feel like I was missing anything. Oh yeah he got the helmet light on sale for $79.99. If "ANYTHING" goes wrong(even if you just aren't satisfied) you can send them back. |
