| How to remove spacers from stem? | Len Sep 27, 2001 5:34 AM | | How do you go about removing spacers from a stem? Is it a big deal, or simple as pie? Thanks in advance for DETAILED input! |
| Removing spacers | Stickers Sep 27, 2001 6:07 AM | | The steerer tube has the spacers, not the stem. Remove the bolt from the headset cap, using an allen wrench. Remove cap. Loosen the bolts on the stem, if you want to move the stem. The spacers can now be removed. Be careful, your fork can slip out of the head tube now. After your adjustments, the space between the top of the steerer tube and the stem (or top spacer) should be 3 to 5 mm. Good Luck. |
| easy as pie! | KMan Sep 27, 2001 6:16 AM | | First unscrew the top cap bolt holding the stem in place.
Loosen the 1 or 2 bolts that clamp the stem onto the shock tube
Remove the stem
Remove or add spacers as warranted
Reinstall stem
Place and tighten top cap screw to hold stem ito place, do not over tighten as it will crush your bearings.
Tighten the 1 or 2 bolts on the stem
The end

| one extra bit of info the others forgot... | BudhaSlug Sep 27, 2001 8:43 AM | | since you'll be pulling spacers from below the stem, its going to leave you with extra steerer tube sticking up, which the top cap would contact instead of pushing on the top of the stem, and thus you wouldn't get any clamping force and end up with a loose headset... assuming your steerer tube was cut to the proper length when you got the bike, this leaves you with two options. The easy one is to simply put all the spacers you pulled from under the stem on top of the stem and then reclamp with the top cap (top cap then pushes on spacers, which push on stem, which pushes on remaining spacers, which pushes on headset... it will work just fine). The hard solution, and one I wouldn't recommend is to re-cut your steerer tube. Since you don't yet know how to take off spacers, this is probably far beyond your skills at the moment, plus has the added problem that if you ever want to raise you stem up again, or get a stem with a taller stack height, you're screwed.
