| Schrader/Presta | Humph Sep 27, 2001 9:33 AM | | Last three bikes came with presta tubes, current one has schrader. Any advantage over switching to schrader (besides the tiny bit of weight loss)? Will the presta valve stems work ok with schrader-drilled rims? Thx. |
| re: Schrader/Presta | Humph Sep 27, 2001 9:35 AM | | Meant to ask, any advantage of switching TO presta... |
| re: Schrader/Presta | Geo Sep 27, 2001 9:48 AM | | Not a single advantage. The stem of the Schrader is sturdier and can be filled just about everywhere unlike a presta.
With the exception of shedding a gram or two I can't think of any reason. |
| re: Schrader/Presta | nigey Sep 28, 2001 4:58 AM | | Don't know how true this is, and it's never influenced my choices, but I've read that a Schraeder will make the rim less strong since it's a bigger hole than the presta.
Course, could be a load of baloney, but then again, the hole is bigger isn't it, and common sense would dictate that should mean less strength? The real proof would be if anyone can post that their rims have failed at where the hole is...... |
| agree | Gun Shy Sep 27, 2001 11:26 AM | | No distinct advantage. But to answer the rim compatibility part of
the question, any rim that will accept schraders should accept
prestas, but not necessarily the other way around. For example, I
had to make the switch to presta when I built up my new wheels on
Velocity deep V rims. The valve hole wasn't big enough to fit a
schrader, and even if it was you wouldn't be able to inflate it. |
| prefer presta | shiggy Sep 28, 2001 8:43 AM | | I find presta easier to use, easier to inflate, more reliable and less likely to be damaged. If you are breaking presta valves during inflation you are not supporting the valve (schader or presta) correctly. (Wrap your hand around the pump head and the rim.) |
