do you really have to do anything to a new chain before slapping it on your bike? I believe I've read about soaking it in kerosene or such. Is this necessary?

Thanks.

Chains come covered with Cosmoline, a sticky rust preventative. You need to clean it off, otherwise every grain of sand from miles around will come and cling to your new chain, and it'll last about a week. Dump it in a can of your favorite solvent overnight, then let it dry, install, lube, and ride!
