| Testicle Pain! | Ballus Giganticus Sep 27, 2001 11:21 AM | | Doctor says the pain in my sack is a swollen vien that I got while riding, it's called varicocele. It means no riding for a while. (sucks!) Can anyone recommend XTRA padded seats/shorts to protect the jewels on the trail?
Thanks,

| re: Testicle Pain! | BadHabit Sep 27, 2001 1:06 PM | | Varicoceles don't go away without surgery, I believe, although sitz baths will reduce congestion. Got a good health plan? Try pointing your gear to the sky; lycra shorts will hold it out of the way for at least a while. More important is the neg effect on coitus, IMO. What are you going to do about THAT? |
| re: Testicle Pain! | Ballus Giganticus Sep 27, 2001 4:00 PM | | Yeah,
I've come to realize that surgery may be the ultimate solution...still need more research befor I let a knife down there. ( the last time they cut me I was just a baby, but I'm sure I'm now that I'm missing a couple inches from the tip ). Coitus-no problem... I told my girlfriend the doctor recommends vigorous massages to the region hourly.

Go to your local sporting goods store, maybe even a Target/KMart/WallMart, they usually have super cushy seats because they appeal to people who are just starting to ride or don't ride much and their butt hurts. Plus the seats are usually inexpensive too so you can see if fixes your problem w/out plunking down mega-bucks.
The more important thing though is to make a sure it's not a lump on the testicle itself because that stands an excellent chance of being testicular cancer. Check out this site http://www.acor.org/tcrc on how to do a testicular examination if your not familar with it already. I'm totally serious, I didn't expect to deal with cancer at age 25, but I did. Doing great now, 4 years later. Just want to get the word out because it does happen. Good to hear you had a doctor appointment to have it checked out, that takes courage. However, I know a lot of guys misdiagnosed by doctors initially. Varicocele veins can be treated with surgery but not always necessary, however it can pose a potential fertility risk down the road. Hopefully none is this will be necessary, but like I said, best to get the word out because time is against you if it happens to be cancer. Good luck and keep an eye on it, make sure it goes away. Otherwise, go back to see the doctor and ask for an ultrasound to get a better look at it. Good luck! |
| re: Testicle Pain! | Ballus Giganticus Sep 27, 2001 4:08 PM | | Hey,
Sorry to read about the TC. That of course was my initial fear with Armstrong being in the media so much. I am going to visit the Doc again and request a referal to a D- Doc. Have been keeping a close watch on it...cause at times it really F-in hurts...but the pain fades after a few days of inactivity.
Glad to hear you're doing good.
Thanks for the info and the link.
Continued good luck to you. |

Seriously, I have a problem where the circulation gets cut off from my left leg and my foot goes numb after about twenty minutes of riding. I have to get off the bike and walk around to get the feeling back. I may have to get it checked out.....maybe it is somewhat of a common problem.
Hope the doctor can help you out. |
| A few things to know... | The Squeaky Wheel Sep 28, 2001 6:29 AM | | Ballus Giganticus,
Pardon me if you know this already...a varicele is a swollen vein. It can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly on the legs. Its pretty common in older women. Testicular variceles are very common (I have one myself), and they usually occur on the left due to its anatomical relationship to other vessels. Most of the time we can't identify why they form. Just genetics, I guess. It tends to feel like a bag of worms. The varicele is NOT part of the testicle. It runs adjacent to it. If you feel any lumps on the testicle, this is cause for concern. The pain of a varicele is usually a throbing type of pain and is generally not severe, although it can get inflamed. This is called phlebitis. Its also possible for the vein to develop a blod clot. This is called thrombophlebitis, although this too is uncommon. However, cyclers like us experience trauma in our nether regions, which injures the already dilated vessel & predisposes to clots.
Another possible thing to consider, besides cancer which is not likely due to the above reasons, is an infection of the sprem vessels called epididymitis. This can be cured by antibiotics. However, the feel of a varicele is very unique and they are easy to ID by physical exam.
The definite test is an ultrasound of your testicle (yeah, they're going to study you down there), although it may not be necessary if the exam screams "varicele."
Sitz baths will help, as will aspirin, tylenol, advil or any other anti-inflammatory. Don't think a cut-out saddle will help at this point, but I do think that they're good in general. I prefer the WTB speed series and as others have said, the terry's are nice as is the selle italia trans am.
Good luck & feel better,
