steerer tube length problem(2 posts)

steerer tube length problemtoad

I did a boo boo! I cut down my steerer tube because I had three spacers stacked on top of the stem and zero spacers underneath. I recently installed a new stem with one 5mm spacer underneath. This left the top of the stem about 3-4mm above the steerer tube. Not a problem. However, I was thinking of adding another 5mm spacer underneath but realized that the stem would then be too far above the steerer tube to be safe ( top of steerer tube would be below the top bolt on the stem).
The headset I'm currently using is a dia-comp "aheadset". I'm thinking of getting a "king" or something better than the dia-comp. What headsets out there have the lowest stack height (lower than the aheadset)? I have a feeling it will be hard to find one 5mm lower!

Icyclesusa.com has a closeout Cane Creek SL5. Supposedly the SL5 has a 21.8mm stack height which is the lowest I know of. It also uses sealed bearings, but Cane Creek has stopped making this headset.

Incidentally, Marzocchi charges $70 parts/labor/shipping to press in a new steerer tube to your crown. I sent my Z2 to them yesterday.

Good luck.
