Marketplace question(7 posts)

Marketplace questionCSS
Sep 27, 2001 1:36 PM
I haven't been to MTBR in a while, and clearly the marketplace format has changed (doh). I was hoping to help a friend find a hardtail, but at first glance the "lowest price" listings don't look very low at all. Is this just a seller's convention -- i.e., what's the relationship between what bikes are actually selling for vs. the "lowest price"?

All wisdom appreciated.

I dont know man, but i want to know the answer too.. I was going to buy a bike from someone on the boards, but the lowest price is about the same deal i can get at my bikeshop most of the time.

The new market place is kind-of-a joke right now. They need to work out a whole hand full of bugs.
Use the daily search or use the 'hardtail' category, meybe 1998 and older....sort by price and just cruise though all of them...or try eBay.

Check eBay where the market determines the price. On MTBR sellers seem to think their bikes are worth more than they really are.

Thanks, all. I bought a bunch of stuff through Marketplace in the old days, and as I remember folks listed an "asking price" instead of a "lowest price". It was usually negotiable, though sometimes people started out with a reasonable number, esp if they wanted a quick sale. I agree with the comment that the prices listed now are close to what a LBS would ask, but without warranty/service, etc! What a drag.

who asked for suggestions from marketplace users on how to improve the forum, then went and ignored what people suggested and made it far
worse. Besides the $3 per listing fee, you have to be a US RESIDENT
to use it (as a buyer or seller) as well as 18 or over. Also finding
prices for items means you have to click each one to see how reasonable or overpriced everything is. And when people complained in the marketplace opioions section, their comments got deleted. Nice
reaction to the users from the admins!

Essentially they've eliminated the consumers and all that's left are
US dealers who don't mind paying $3 per ad for their products. Posting volume is down about 90% since the format change. Most people go to
pinkbike.com or nsmb.com now for reasonable prices.

Hey, thanks for those links! I realized that the other thing that's missing is the "wanted to buy" option. That was the best -- I put up the specs and price I wanted on a bike and got about a dozen viable responses. Jeez.
