I'm going to put some clipless onto my ride. I don't want the screw up the threads. This sounds silly, but to loosen the pedals which direction do you turn the pedal?
Facing the right side of the bike....fred³

you turn the wrench counterclockwise. Facing the left side you turn the wrench clockwise. Another way to look at it that you turn the right side the direction you loosen any bolt. So it's to the left(towards the rear of the bike) with the wrench located at 12 o'clock. When you face the left turn the wrench towards the back of the bike too.

...The right side is a right handed thread (normal-righty tighty, lefty loosey) and the left side is a left handed (bass ackwards) thread. Same way for the bottom bracket cup threads.

forget all the other ideas that orient you to some particular part or another. just turn the wrench toward the FRONT WHEEL to tighten, to the REAR WHEEL to loosen.
