| I want to upgrade wheelset and brakes... | dcepp Sep 28, 2001 4:21 AM | | what do you recommend for me?
My goal is to upgrade to disc brakes and a light wheelset comparable to the current setup listed below:
Current setup: WTB Laser XC wheelset and Avid SD-7 vee brakes on a 2001 K2 Razorback Team.
I weigh 205 and would like a mechanical or hydraulic disc brake and a good lightweight XC wheelset. I do not want to add more than 1-lb. to the bikes' weight. Let me know of your experiences, good and bad.
Thanks,
Dave |

| I just did. | Russ-Ale Sep 28, 2001 8:48 AM | | oddsand endos.com Mike built me a nice wheelset for a really good price. Ringle disc jockey hubs laced 3x to Sun DS-1 disk rims for $217. I then added the Avid mechanicals @ $70 a piece. Not sure on the weight issue. My wheels feel a touch heavier than my non-disk Sun/Ringle. |
| Avid Fan! | Steve-O Sep 28, 2001 10:05 AM | | I go about 185#'s and I love the Avid Disk brakes. I have them running drag free for almost a year with no complaints. The stopping power is more then enough for XC and I would feel confident doing some light downhilling on these brakes. As for levers I use Sram 9.0's primarily for the light weight.
Wheels are Sun Ringle Disc-O-Tec's. They are also light weight: however, I have had to true them up more then usual after rides. Link for the wheels is here http://www.sun-ringle.com/ShowRoom/MTB/Wheels/discotek.html . Gotta admit that Oddsandendos.com wheels look pretty good. Especially the American Classic hubs. |
| Here I go again... | næstep Sep 28, 2001 10:37 AM | | Front:
Avid Disc
Real Designs Disc Hub
Sun DS1XC
Rear:
Avid SD-Ti
XTR Hub
Mustang Rim
(Soon to be Rohloff Speedhub & Velocity Aero Heat AT)
Weight:
235 lbs.
I'm no lightweight, and I'm not exactly a weight weenie (I picked the Avid SD-Tis for the color). I'm not suggesting this exact setup per se, but the front disc/rear V concept works well for me. For someone looking to save a few grams, it's great, and for someone looking to save a few bucks, it's even better.
Of course, if you're riding in a lot of wet and muddy conditions (I don't), a rear disc is the way to go.

| re: I want to upgrade wheelset and brakes... | sponge Sep 29, 2001 9:40 AM | | This is what I just got from Mike Garcia at oddsandendos.com
Am Classic HD-140 disc hub, new style, no adapters needed with grease fitting, Wheelsmith 14/15 butted spokes 3X ,alloy nips, velocity synergies asym rims, tape, 1660 grams + 2% weight guarantee=1693grams max. Add some Avid mechanicals, 648grams and its a nice set. Go with Sun DS/XC disc only rims and save 60grams more and still have a great stiff set up. No tax, no upcharge for black spokes, minimal shipping costs and great guy. 1-866-292-0124. Hope that helps. Good luck. |
