| Rocky Mountain pivot bushing replacement problems | Slayer Nov 1, 2001 1:33 PM | | I got some replacement bushings for my 2001 RM Slayer and I can't get the allen bolts out of the main pivot by the BB. Can anyone suggest something I can do before I round out the holes? Do they both come out counter-clockwise like a normal bolt? Has anyone done this with their edge or like bike?
Thanks a lot,

| A few tips.... | SoCalSar Nov 2, 2001 9:33 AM | | It looks like it's already rounded a little, so some care is required if you have a prayer of getting it out without major surgery. Pick up a BRAND NEW, high quality (Park,Craftsman,or Snap-On) allen wrench of the correct size. Laying the bike on its side will probably be the easiest way to do the next part. Put the wrench in the bolt and tap it a few times with a hammer to make sure it is seated as deeply as it will go. KEEP THE WRENCH ABSOLUTELY STRAIGHT! I know tapping sounds like voodoo, but believe me it helps. Push into the bolt with a lot of force. Now turn the wrench very SLOWLY, again keeping it absolutely straight in the bolt hole. Counter-clockwise is the correct direction to turn. Going slowly and keeping the wrench straight are the keys here. If it still rounds, then sometimes you can force (hammer) another wrench that is a 1/2mm larger into the hole and get it out- low sucess rate though. If all else fails, then you use a bolt extractor set and get it out that way. 100% sucess rate if used correctly. In any case, replace the bolt when you do get it out. FYI, rounded allen bolts are almost always caused by using worn out tools. Good luck. |
