Rock Shox SID SL or ?????(11 posts)

Rock Shox SID SL or ?????Matt
Nov 1, 2001 7:14 PM
I was hoping to get a set of SID's but I read the reviews here and a lot of people were having problems with them. I was just wondering what was in the same ballpark of it. I do mostly XC racing and short track. Hoping for lockout. I ride a 01' Trek Fuel 90 Disk, so disk compatible would be nice ;-) Also, but not neccesary, anything black would go nice with my bike, that being said though, i want somthing that works first

thanks,

Matt

Marzocchi X-Fly 100, it's half pound heavier, but stiffer and more plusher in my opinion. Or, if you have money, Marzocchi Marathon. Same weight as SL, but stiffer and plusher, by accounts of others. The Black Elite from Manitou looks pretty nice.

If you look at the Xflys- ONLY look at the 2001's. The 2000's were horrible forks- even Marz gave up and redesigned them after just one year. The 2002 have fans, but are not even remotely light, figure in the real world about 3/4 pound heavier for the X-fly 100 (but more travel 100mm, rather than 80-mm, and its stiffer).

The Marathons is nowhere near the weight of the SID SL or Race- about 1/3 to 1/2 pound heavier by design (its more a trail fork)- but probably a nice ride, once they finally break in. Do note the Marathons are way pricey right now. You usually can find deals on SID's- especially 2001's.

Its always a trade off- weight and stiffness. Manitou is interesting, but its a new design- try to ride one first.

How much do you weigh? That will make a big difference in wether or not the SID is going to be stiff enough for you. Any particular price range that you need to stay in?

3.4lbs uncut on digital postal scale (I've weighed 4 of them). A fair bit heavier but also considerably stiffer than the SID. In my opinion it's worth the extra weight unless you're very light.

Our local shop had one in on a special order for this guy.
Weighed it with uncut steerer and it came in at 3.25 lbs.

Pretty darn good for a 100mm travel fork!

I am waiting to see if these pop up on ebay...

Right now I weight 175, but hope to lose about 10 pounds by spring.m As for price. I do a lot of flyfishing and there is a common phrase, by once, buy right. I don't really want to spend $500+ but if i'm going to get somthing good that i won't have to replace or repair in a few years i would bite the bullit and buy it, if you know what i mean. If I was to answer that question truthfully, I'd like to spend $300-$400, but as i said before, wouldn't mind paying more for somthing nice.

I agree - "buy once, buy right".

I used to buy lots of cheap reels thinking I was saving money and went through 4 or 5 $30 reels. I bought one Penn Reel and I am still using it 10 years later.

i have heard lots of people having reliability probs and complaining about flex in the SID - my friend who loves Marzocchi's did not like the feel of the Duke SL.

I think the best choice is the Marathon S.
Yep, I totally agree. Well said! (nm)Ventanarama
