Tire Sizes(3 posts)

Hey all, What size tires should I run in the front and rear? Currently have 1.9 in the front and a 2.0 in the rear. I ride XC in the desert, no mud ridding, very little sand, mostly hard packed dirt.

What are the differences in bigger/smaller tires in front and in rear?

I have a set of 2.1 tires that I pulled off when I first got the bike (advice of friend) Wondering if maybe the front or rear should be swapped to the 2.1 for better climbing, etc.

Thanks in advanced.

I also ride in the desert. A wider tire up front (2.3) will help roll through sand and make your bike more stable and corner better on downhills, however, it does add weight. You'll have to make your own decision as to whether the increased ability to bomb down hills is worth the weight penalty going uphill.

I ride with a 2.3 up front and a 2.1 in the rear.

For xc racing, stick with the 1.9 size. 1.9 is a fast, light tire, but less stable. I think it's too small for all around fun riding. The extra stability you get with a 2.1 is well worth the minor weight penalty (the difference is usually less 100 grams - that's less than 4 ounces). For just playing around on desert trails, you're better off with 2.1 f & r, or you can try the 2.3 up front.
FWIW, I'm with MarshallCory

I'm an old car guy, and it always looks funny to me to run the big tire on the front and the small one in the back. It DOES work, though. I also have a lot more success with the widest tires that will fit the frame for desert riding.
