| POLL: Clipless v. Platform pedals. Pro.&Cons........... | MrrrG Dec 9, 2001 11:08 AM | | Want to know before I try clipless. |
| My rule of thumb................ | Mike T.® Dec 9, 2001 11:15 AM | | .....is Clipless for everything but technical terrain where you spend more time clipping in or out than you do being in the pedals.
Clipless for pedaling, platforms for performing. |
| Agree................ | BrianU Dec 11, 2001 4:21 AM | | Both have a place in mountainbiking. For general xc riding, clipless are superior to platforms. The learning curve is frustrating, but once you get used to them, you will wonder how you ever got by without them. Like Mike T pointed out, technical riding is where platforms come in to the picture. |
| Platforms all the way! | BK Dec 9, 2001 1:55 PM | | Sorry guys, I love platforms. I never became absolutely comfortable on clipless pedals, and as a result, my performance has always suffered on them. I found myself climbing better, descending better, and actually riding much better on platforms. Platforms keep the "can I clip out in time?" thought out of my head on rides, and as a result I ride better. Besides, I have yet to find a pair of cliplees shoes that are actually comfortable. I have wide feet which are always happy in a pair of Vans on a pair of platforms.

| Both... | DeRanger Dec 9, 2001 3:14 PM | | ...I ditched my Looks for a pair of Shimano 324s - cage on one side, SPD on the other. Best of both worlds - clip in for long grinds where pedaling efficiency is most important, clip out for sketchy technical stuff.
Works for me...

| my 2 cents | Cabin Fever Dec 9, 2001 6:14 PM | | once i went to clipless pedals, i have been hooked, and i can't imagine going back. holy shiznit. my feet never get jarred off the pedal on bumps, and ihave worlds more control of my bike. i love riding technical stuff, and i wouldn't be able to do the stuff i do if i couldn't control my back end like i do. however, i am not a downhiller, nor am i really serious about trials riding. i would love to have a trials bike with platforms and try it out, but i am doing fine with my mountain bike with clipless. anyway, for XC, clipless is, in my opinion, THE most important upgrade on can do for their bike. once you get used to them, clipping in and out is not a problem at all. in fact, it becomes second nature. but the first week or two can be frustrating. but it is worth it. |
| personal choice | Jo Toha Dec 9, 2001 10:13 PM | | Arguments can be made for both types of pedals, but at the end it comes down to personal preferences. I do not consider myself a freerider and I ride a hardtail C'dale which is a XC bike, however, I raced BMX in SouthAmerica in the late 80's and have not been able to give up on plataforms. I still use old style Vans with Shimano DX pedals. Now, because of my BMX background, I can lift my bike at will with plataforms while friends of mine who have much more experience in Mountain Bikes cannot do it with out clipless.
To make a long story short. What do YOU like better. Try both first and get the ones you like.
