| Tires for Molokai | Luis Dec 9, 2001 2:53 PM | | Hi. I'm going to be spending a couple of weeks riding at Molokai Ranch over Christmas/New years. I have a feeling that my half-worn Racing Raptors probably aren't the best thing. I'd appreciate suggestions for good tires for the conditions there, and any other suggestions about the riding on the ranch and around Molokai. TIA. |

I would imagine that you will find wet conditions there as it is the rainy season now. Our mud is very thick and sticky. My tires totally pack up so I hate riding in wet conditions and rarely do. I'd bring either all condition type tires or mud specific, but someone who has actually ridden there would know more than I. We tend to have a lot of roots and rocks here so you may want some Euro wet condition tires to try to get some stick on those. |

I'm not sure how much rain comes down in the winter though. When I was there in the summer, there was a lot of volcanic dust type of soil around. I would first call the bike shop at Molokai Ranch and ask them what kind of weather they have around this time of year. Also, the people who work in the shop and lead rides are definitely hard-core riders. They may have good suggestions as to what to bring. If the weather is dry, I would definitely bring a good soft conditions tire (Team Control/Master or Bontrager Jones) The Racing Raptor or other semi-slicks probably wouldn't give enough bite in the deep volcanic dust.
Have fun! There are some great trails there! |
