| What to do? | Pived! Dec 9, 2001 6:26 PM | | I had to wait 2.5 agonizing months for my dream bike which was ordered from a shop by phone. One of the many excuses were no parts which I managed to locate within minutes on the Internet and had sent to the shop.
And when the bike arrived, imagine the disappointment when I realise as I unpacked it, that it didn't have the fork, seat post and stem that I specifically asked for.
Another month went by before I receive the correct fork (MARS Elite) and stem. But instead of the 28.6 mm Thompson Elite seat post I wanted, I was sent a 27.2 mm seat post and a shim (I wasn't consulted on this).
I would like your opinions on what I should do. Do I just accept the smaller seat post + shim OR should I demand the correct size seat post? I have still to send back the Black Elite fork and Thompson Elite stem. By the way, are there any disadvantages with a shim? |
| Sounds like you bought it from Kalo..... | Tom Collins Dec 9, 2001 7:11 PM | | He's got a horrible reputation for putting customers through shit like you went through.
There is no disadvantage to running a smaller seatpost with the proper sized shim, unless it really bothers you that you have to use a "fix" on a $2k bike. But it won't hurt anything.
Personally, rather than deal with Kalo (if that is who you bought it from), I'd just take the shimmed post, and chalk it up as a lesson learned the hard way - NEVER, EVER, EVER buy from that shop again.... |
| That does sound like a Kalo Story... | BK Dec 9, 2001 9:54 PM | | If you were going through Kalo, just be happy you got your bike. You can try to deny the order and ship it back, but you will be waiting another 2.5 months to get your refund from them. Believe me, you would be better off cutting your losses at this point, if that's who you were dealing with, and picking up anotherseatpost elswhere.

| What shop did you buy from?.... | Dirt Pilot Dec 10, 2001 3:41 AM | | ...Shops giving poor service need to be exposed. Settling for a smaller post with a shim on your dream bike in my book is not at all acceptable. I'd be ready to hop on a plane and ram that post up their.....You get the idea. Anyway, please post the name of this shop. |
| What shop did you buy from?.... | Pived! Dec 10, 2001 11:20 AM | | It wasn't Kalo. I dropped into the shop when I was in the L.A. area to check out the size of the frame. He seemed a decent chap. I don't think he was intentionally out to rip me off. And he was willing to send me the 'right' parts. Mistakes with the first shipment, I put it down to incompetence or a sloppy employee but getting it wrong the second time. You're right. I shouldn't put up with a 'fix' for my dream bike. I think I will hold his goods until he sends me the seat post. It will definitely be faster if I buy the seat post myself and charge him. |
| Which version of the Thomson seatpost? | kristian Dec 10, 2001 9:05 AM | | I ask because depending on what length (or layback) you specified, Thomson might not make a 28.6mm. I have an elite setback on my Bullit (also a 28.6mm) and had to shim it because the only sizes they make are a 26.8 and a 27.2... Of course this was made clear to me when I ordered. I have a little side to side slipage occasionally, but for the most part, the shim works well. |

| By the way, I believe you're PEEVED, not Pived. nm | Pived! Dec 10, 2001 11:34 AM | | Sorry, I stand corrected. Never had to spell that word. Do you know fish can be spelled 'phych' and still sound correct phonetically. Funny language, English. By the way, I spelled Thomson wrongly as well. |
