Need advice on trainers....Santa Cruz
Dec 10, 2001 8:21 AM
Over the past couple years I've been into running an completed four marathons. I'm now going down the biking path. I've entered this year's Sea Otter and am starting to train on a mountain and road bike. My problem is my job does not afford me time during the week to ride in daylight. I'm looking a buying a trainer that I can run in my gargage. A couple questions.

1. Performance trainer seem to be in a reasonable price range. Are they any good.

2. Noise. Could I ride one of these in the early am (garage) without waking my children or the neighboors.

Thanks in advanace.

check out rollers; they are much more entertaining and will help you develop a smoother spin, but you can't do as much intensity and intervals.
Here is one to look into, looks as if they have a good product,KMan

Unfortunatly it is on the expensive side, but if all is as stated, well worth the $$

I have a set of rollers made by Performance (which I bought used from a friend). Let me tell yah! What an amazing thing it has done to my pedaling. I now pedal in smooth circles and comfortably pedal between 110 and 115 rpms!

Any pro will tell you: If you want to be a better rider, learn how to pedal in circles.

They're not as boring as trainers and you get much more of a "riding" feel to your workouts (Mr. Charlie even goes numb, which is too much of a riding feel, but oh well). For quietness, go with straight slicks - not semi-slicks. I was amazed how much quieter my rollers are with slicks instead of semis. I'm not relegated to the basement any more (at least not for my riding).

...Performance is the way to go. You can return those things anytime if they blow out on you. Otherwise, for stability, durability and quietness, The Kurt Kinetic is the best trainer out there. THe "road machine" with the 6 pound flywheel really feels like you're actually on the road and not sitting in front of the TV watching Oprah gush with her gal pals.

That will set you back 330 bucks
