Fork Upgrade(6 posts)

Fork Upgradeadamb

I am looking to upgrade my 2000 Manitou SX fork. I am looking for something that is with more adjustability and travel. I am looking at the X-Vert line and am wondering if that would be a significant upgrade for me. Pricepoint has great prices right now on the X-Vert and X-Vert Air. However, I am heavy, 225lbs, and am not sure I should get the Air. Is that a safe assumption? Also, is the Marketplace or ebay a good place to find a fork? Thanks.

putting more travel on the front end doesn't void your warranty.

Air is fine. My friend is 300lbs and runs a fully air Marzocchi.

Air works well for me. I'm 235, and have run air carts in my Judy and an AD-12 on the rear end with great reliability. My new fork is an X-Vert Air, so I'm counting on that run of good luck to continue.

I upgraded from SX to X-Vert Air and the difference was dramatic. If you ride technical terrain, your speed and endurance will both increase as well as your perceived abilities. You will clean sections that once were problems. That was my experience anyway. Air should not be a problem, however, be warned that some here have experienced air loss due, most likely, from dried up seals. Posters have noted that the fix is to keep some motor oil over the seal (check the Manitou site FAQ section for details). I like the air for adjustability, but you will love the regular x-vert just the same. With the prices so low I don't think you'd want to risk buying used, but it's your money.

I'm a wee bit heavier than you are, and spent a lot of time in the Shock section asking questions about shocks.

What I was told is that air will hold up for a while, but for us heavier folks, it's better to go with a coil/air combo, because that way the air is supplemental, so there's less pressure on the seals. The springs do most of the work, the air just takes care of the above and beyond part.

The one that was recommended to me was the 'zokie Z-3 bam... which coincidentally enough is on mad sale at Phattire.com for like half of what it was when it came out 2 years ago. Yeah, it's an older model fork, but it worked well enough I have people telling me now that I should go with it...
You're right...xerxes

that's why the X-Vert Air is made exactly that way. It has a coil spring for the first 50% of travel and the air takes up the rest. It also has a coil negative spring to relieve any stiction that the air seals might impose on the system. It works beautifully for me.
