what's the best snow/ice pedal ?weezy

I just did my first winter ride with my shimano M424's and they sucked. The pedals got so clogged with ice that every time I stopped I had to wait 5 minutes chopping out the ice in order to continue riding. Can anyone out there recommend a good winter pedal? Thanks.

take off the clipless, get some el-cheapo flats, pack them with waterproof grease, put on your winter hiking boots (or whatever), and there you go. It's what we do in Vancouver, clipless just doesn't work when it's iced up, and your feet are free to help you recover from those little unxepected side trips on the ice. jim

Never a problem with platforms + clip and strap + warm boots. A few weeks ago I went out with my 747's in mild snow conditions. I could not get back into my pedals after a little while. The ice built up on the pedal's cleat area (each of the pedals looked like a snow ball).

I'm having a ton of fun with my flats. A little odd at first but really rocks once your used to it. Makes riding fun again, cuz you can hang it out a little more and not worry about unclipping or getting back in. Good for power too, different muscle usage... Try it.

Good luck...

They work pretty well especially if you hose your cleats and shoes with butter-flavored Pam prior to riding (I hear regular flavor works too, as does WD40). Still, if you are forced to walk for any distance, your shoes will become an iceball and you won't be able to clip in anymore. This leaves you with two slippery steel rails to rest your ice covered foot on and is damn near impossible to stay on.

This year I have a good set of flats and I'm sure they will work 100 times better than the Times--especially for those inevitable (and frequent) dabs associated with winter riding. Good luck!

I shouldn't put butter-flavored PAM on my flats? Hmn. Maybe lemon flavor will be stickier with the citrus factor? Jim ;P
what about egg-beaters? nmweezy

Platforms or SpeedplaysKarkus

Yep, platforms are best. I like the ones with big, spiky pegs and wear hiking boots with worn down soles (they stick to pegs better). If you want to ride clipless, I've found that my Speedplays are way better than SPDs (and i've heard Times are good too)
