| is there a big difference between Cane Creek rear shocks | JJHACK Dec 10, 2001 3:27 PM | | Is there a big performance difference between the AD-5 and the AD-12 I have a chance at a used AD-12 that will fit perfectly(from the same kind of bike)and I curently have the AD-5 on my bike. I can get the AD-12 cheap and it's like new. Will it make a decent improvment or should I just stick with the AD-5? The guy who has it is upgrading to the Cane Creek Cloud 9 and offered to sell me the AD-12. |
| Yes it will make a Big difference... | Squash Dec 10, 2001 8:13 PM | | The adjustable damping on the AD12 makes the shock much easier to tune to your bike, the terrain, and your riding style. Depending on how good a deal it is, I'd go for it.
Good Dirt |

One thing to think about, is that when you change travel from 2.8" to 4.1" you really should change the air pressure and rebound damping as well. Since the AD-12 has an external rebound adjuster, it would allow you to make the rebound adjustment on the trail (i.e. to adjust the rebound on the AD-5, you have to disassemble the shock). |
| Your right Zag | JJHACK Dec 11, 2001 6:05 AM | | I do have the Sugar3+ I got it for real cheap. I can't wait to see how much difference it makes. The AD-5 is good but I am hoping the rebound canbe slowed down a bit with the AD12 so it does not spring up or bounce as much. With the adjustments external I think it will be easier to fool with. Not to mention I'll have a rear shock as a spare now. |
| Get the 12 and play with it. | TC Dec 11, 2001 7:58 AM | | One thing to try that worked great for me is to run a bit lower pressure than in your ad5 and then increase the compresion damping a bit and rebound a bit. you'll be amazed at the controlled motion. |
| wait a second... | D.F.L. Dec 12, 2001 6:17 AM | | It may be important what type of bike that shock came from. If that shock used to provide a cushy ride on a 2.5" travel frame, then it will probably not have firm enough damping to provide you a good ride on your 4"(?) sugar+.
Shocks are supposed to be tuned to the particular design of a frame. The Mfgrs of the shock are supposed to build the shock to provide a decent ride and range of adjustability for a particular frame. IF they do that (and sometimes I wonder) then a shock swap may not work as you had hoped.
Have him let you try it out before comitting. |
