Tighten SPDs...turn screw at the top clockwise?(9 posts)

Tighten SPDs...turn screw at the top clockwise?Guest

To tighten my SPDs in terms of being locked in-
Do I turn the screw (at the top where my cleat locks in) clockwise?

I'm asking because the screw is frozen in place and is going to be a b|tch to move. So I want to be sure.

Sounds like the screw is almost frozen, I would use this final opportunity to remove it and properly lubricate it with anti-sieze. BTW, tightening the screw increases tension on the springs and makes the SPD cleat feel tighter.

I switched to Time pedals awhile back. But when I used Shimano pedals in the past, there was an allen-head adjustment screw on the FRONT (the side your toe is on) and the BACK (the side your heel is on) of the pedal (one adjusts the top side tension, the other adjusts the bottom side tention).

...the screw on the "flat" of the pedal is not what you need to tamper with. use the allen bolts on the front and back (assuming the pedal position to be horizontal, as during use) of the pedal to adjust the tension. be sure to adjust them both the same amount and only a little at a time until you aren't clipping out accidentally any more. also, don't screw them all of the way out.

good luck,

DON'T SCREW THEM OUT TOO FAR!!!!Disaster

Like he said...don't screw them all the way out. There is a little red indicator to prevent you from doing this. You are not supposed to move it past where you can see the indicator. If you loosen them too much the mechanism will pop apart and you will have to send it back to Shimano to be fixed...and it ain't cheap.

If I'm clipping out to easily, I'd tighten this right?
-There'd be no reason for me to screw them out -would there?
Sorry for the dumb questions.
What type of clips?Disaster

I have both single release (51s) and multi-release (55's) and the multi-release come loose much easier. The single release work much more like Time pedals and only release with pivoting your heel. The multi-release ones don't clip as solidly and unclip with a twist from almost any angle (hence the name.) Some people feel safer with the multi-release clips. Others prefer the more secure locking of the single-release clips.

You will see more red as you tighten them...less as you loosen them. Plus, it will get harder to turn as you tighten them.

...there's no reason to screw them out. unless, of course, you wanted to be absolutely certain that they are all set to the same tension and you wanted to start at zero or something. chances are they are all the same tension already so just tighten them a cilck, ride for a little while, tighten again, ride... until you like the way they feel.
