Fisher hardtail owners -- What size bottom bracket??(8 posts)

Fisher hardtail owners -- What size bottom bracket??Bob™
Dec 11, 2001 7:52 AM
Subject says it all...I'll be building up a bike with probably a 2001 0r 2002 Big Sur or possibly Hoo Koo. I'm wondering what size BB to pick up.

Thanks

Bob,

I have an almost new XT ES70 Bottom Bracket that I had on a Fisher hardtail for 1 month. It is size 68x113. I don't know if its the one you need, but I know that I've always had good luck emailing Fisher at consumer_help@fisherbike.com. Ask them what size BB you need. If you're interested I'll sell you the BB for $15. The bracket is for splined cranks (LX or XT).
Thanks Luv2Bob™

I fired off an email to Fisher. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the offer on your XT BB. (good deal BTW)
I was thinking of going ISIS splined on this bike as that's what I have on my other bike. I'm trying to keep my shop tools of the same type. Plus, seeing as shimano gets most of my drivetrain money, I like to give them the finger when I have the opportunity to buy a competitor's product.

Thanks again.

The various Fisher frames I've worked on...næstep

...have had 73x113mm square taper BBs installed. I would email or phone Fisher anyway just to be sure. Don't count on your LBS to provide the correct answer, as I've been told wrong before.

If you are going Shimano splined and wish to maintain a "factory" chainline, you will want to go with an increased spindle length (i.e. 113 square=118 splined=50mm chainline). I've heard this is true with ISIS as well, but I'm not positive. I wouldn't be surprised if Fisher didn't relay this, so assume the BB size they give you is for a square taper Shimano UN series.

Great point! But one more questionBob™

I wrote Fisher and they responded very quickly.
THey said 73 x 113 but, I didn't ask if that was tapered or splined. I just asked what they use on their hardtails this year.

Their site lists the BB as Shimano BB-LP27. I checked shimano's site and this is the Alivio BB, but there are no product descriptions for the Alivio group. Is is BB-LP27 splined or tapered???
The LP27 is a square taper...næstep

...and if you check Shimano's European site, you'll find that a 113mm LP27 produces a 50mm chainline. You'll also find the 118mm ES70 (listed under XT) as giving the same 50mm chainline.

Again, my experience with Shimano stuff and these numbers have prooven true. I've only heard it holds true with ISIS, but I haven't played with any ISIS components yet.

The LP27 is a square taper...Bob™

Thanks Naestep,

Your logic makes total sense. I'll pose the question to the shop when I purchase.
