is xc racing going extinct?mikeb

just when i got a bitchin' new bike and was ready to try xc racing after taking last season and most of the season before off, i find that two important early season races in northern california are'nt going to happen in 2002. i visited CSM's page yesterday and discovered that there will be no sizzler and no boogs race this spring. what a g&d%mned bummer. MESP is no longer running the california state championship series, so that means there won't be anything else at laguna seca other than the sea otter and the 24 hour race.

what is going on here?!?

i used to race twice at grant ranch, twice at boggs and twice at laguna seca each season! now there is nearly nothing in northern california, unless you want to drive to the sierras or even nevada for the kooka cup series. i know there's the lake sonoma series, but that's kind of far to be driving as well. does anyone know whether or not another promotor is going to hold races a grant ranch or boggs? has the interest in cross country racing in northern california and perhaps the western united states dropped off that much?

please tell me it ain't so!!!
Not gone - just longer 12/24 hr racesDJS

its a change of taste for people. Lots of us are sick of the short stuff. The 12 and 24hr stuff is seeing attendance growth of 100-300% each year for new races. Thats unreal.

After a couple 24's your legs are smoked for the season, and the little 1-2 hr races just pale in comparison (fun factor, hang out with buddies factor, drunk naked chicks factor, etc)
Still lots of racingRF

but just not much in the bay area/monterey region. There was the "racing at the ranch" in gilroy last september, maybe that will be back. It seemed successful. Nothing at grant ranch that I know of. I don't think the interest has waned too much, but promoters seem to be changing. mesp has switched entirely to adventure racing. Almost seems to me that the promoters are looking for a bigger return. They know that they can't charge $50 for an XC race so they switch to other events that they can charge more per person. 12/24 hr and adventure races generate more revenue per person.

You still have the largest event in the world going on at laguna seca in about 2 mos. Sea Otter!!
drunk naked chicks?!?!mikeb

damn the sea otter, there ain't no drunk naked women there! it's too damned cold at laguna seca in march for that kind of stuff!

tell me more about the specifics of drunk naked chicks at twenty four hour races.

what gives?
Damn, I've been going to the wrong races (nt)Philber

Yes, what you said is true about the cancellations.

There's will be the Napa Valley Dirt Classic Apr 21 in Angwin (Napa) and probably another Howell Mountain Challenge (same place) in August.

And although there's no Napa World Cup this year, galeforce.org has the message "This is not the end! The world class Domaine Chandon venue will very likely continue its partnership with Galeforce in making memorable cycling events. Stay tuned to this web site in the coming weeks for an exciting announcement about cyclo-cross." so hopefully there'll be an MTB race there too this year.
Not a chance.....sbaryenbruch

Last year the WORS (Wisconsin Off Road Series) attracted an average of, I believe, 950 riders per race. This number may have been a little higher or lower. Needless to say nearly 1000 riders per race for a 12 race series is not a sign of XC racing "dying". I do have to agree though, the 24 our races are more fun.
