| Frame Strip - Polished Aluminum | John Jan 16, 2002 9:57 AM | | Has anyone stripped an aluminum frame and kept it as natural aluminum finish? Do the commercial strippers work well? Would you need to remove the headset and bottom bracket, or can you use masking tape in these areas? Also, does masking tape prevent the stripping action? For instance, if I wanted to keep the head tube and part of the top tube painted and strip the rest, would masking take keep a clean line, or would the stripper seep under? After stripping, what would I need to do to keep it looking good? Clear coat? Wax? |

On none-bike stuff I've used Aircraft Paint Remover which works really well, causing the paint to just "melt" off.

| bought a frame once... | toad Jan 16, 2002 1:25 PM | | from a guy a work. It was a schwinn homegrown that he had stripped of all paint and left natural (bare aluminum w/no polishing). It looked pretty cool, greyish colored, almost like a Ti frame. I'm not sure what stripper he used but I'm sure he stripped it after removing all parts (down to bare frame). I never applied any clear coat or wax to it but did try Mother Mag polish which only made the aluminum darker for awhile. You could try clear coating it, but I have heard that over time the chemical reaction between the untreated aluminum and clear coating will cause the clear coat to become discolored (yellowed). |

They sell it here: www.branfordbike.com |
