| "Popping" noise coming from BB area!! HELP!?!? | mtbiac Jan 16, 2002 7:01 PM | | Bike= Giant AC Air 2001. Practically brand new. Rode about 2hrs. I am noticing a "popping" noise coming from the BB area whenever I pedal HARD (climb/sprint). When i bounce on the bike or do bunnyhops i dont notice this noise. I checked the crank arms, they were pretty loose, so i tightened them, but the noise is still there which leads me to beleive its the BB. I got it to make the noise WHILE i was tightening the Crankarms which also leads me to beleive its the BB, not the other drivetrain components. Cranks= XT, BB= XT. All other drivetrain components are XT except rear der= XTR.
its also not either shock, checked that out already.
PLEASE HELP!?!?!?!
Also- it is NOT chainslap or anything, i am positive |
| check pedals... | gra$$ya$$ Jan 16, 2002 7:50 PM | | I had the same problem with my C'dale a while back, I checked and tightened everything and the noise was still there.
I went a got a decent pedal wrench and tightened up my pedals and viola.
Of course, do the obvious first. Check to make sure everything is tightened up to the right torque specs. Don't trust your strength if you are using tools with relatively short handles. You can pretty much guarrantee that parts like the cranks, BB and pedals won't be tight enough.
Btw, did you make sure you applied grease to all the interfaces?

| Might be..... | Bonsai Jan 16, 2002 7:57 PM | | Might be the crank arm streched and bottoming out on the BB. Look and see if the metal at the edge of the crank is swelled out. If it is, file it down and the problem should go away. |

When I took it to my LBS they said that most likely it was plastic cups used in the BB and that it probably wasn't detrimental. I haven't had anything adverse happen yet. If you do manage to eliminate this I would appreciate an email, thanks. :)

| re: "Popping" noise coming from BB area!! HELP!?!? | Hank Jan 16, 2002 9:06 PM | | go back to the shop where you bought it. They should know to tighten cranks down on new bikes. What idiots. Sounds like a fairly normal Shimano cartridge bb noise, caused by the cartridge body flexing against the non-drive side cup. This is best cured by putting non-drying Permatex gasket sealant in the area where the two come into contact (tip direct from Shimano). You can use grease but it will go away and the creak will come back. Some people use plumber's tape or something, but the Permatex thing has always worked for me. Ask the shop if they know what they're doing. Ask for the service manager. Good luck.
as the others mentioned it could be several things, but my guess is that it's the bb. I bet those guys didn't tighten down the cassette, either. |
| Teflon Tape | Coolhand Jan 17, 2002 11:02 AM | | Some bike models (especially Cannondales) should come with a roll of the stuff. Seems to cure 90% of all BB noise issues. The other thing is the new Shimano Cranks can work themselves loose rather quickly, even if they are tight at the shop. XTR cranks come to mind on this issue.

| Teflon Tape | Sheedy Jan 18, 2002 1:09 PM | | I agree. My 'dale was forever creaking.I tried everything to no avail.Changed the BB a couple of times. One thing did stop the creaking for a while and that was when I tightened up the rear QR real tight.Sounds bizzarre I kow but it's true. |
| Same deal here... | Matno Jan 17, 2002 1:53 PM | | I agree it's probably the BB. Mine was fixed by applying sealant to the BB threads (I'm pretty sure it was Loctite). Never had a problem since. Went away completely. Don't let the shop get away with that... |
