American Classic hub owners/help(6 posts)

If you own the older version/grease port hubs, is there a seal between the axle and the freehub body on your hub? Can you see the cartridge bearing where the grease comes spewing out?
My newer Shook Design hubs have a seal that takes up the space between the axle and freehub and I am curious about the older design.
Thanks

i'm pretty sure that my rear hub (with grease port) does not have a seal there. i'll check it out tonight.

as for being able to see where the grease comes out, i no longer pump any grease in so, no, i can't see it come out. i tried using the grease port at first but it was a pain in the butt. grease would fill the inside of the freehub and make for terrible performance. grease would also come out of the bearings in globs and fling onto my rims making for "awesome" stopping power! the grease also came out behind my cassette and then turned my cassette into a nasty pile of dirt laden crap. now i have to take the hubs apart, degrease and re-pack the bearings after every sloppy ride. sucks. i wish the bearings were sealed.

I went for a long ride last night and totally forgot to look at my hubs. i do, however, plan to break down the rear one tonight or tomorrow morning and re-lube it in which case it will be obvious if there is a seal in place. i'll post back as soon as i can. sorry for the delay.

we may be getting hammered by a big winter storm tomorrow (i'm in fredericksburg va)and i want to ride in the middle of it so i'm going to grease things up well before i go and then i'll probably need to do it again when i get home so i'll have a very good idea of what goes where on the inside of the hub.

...so i finally took the thing apart and then got myself in front of a computer. sorry again for how long it's taken me and i don't even know if you'll bother checking this post as it has aged for a while but.....

the outer two sets of bearings have seals on one side (the outer facing side) but other than that there is no seal between the axles and the bearings. i think there "should" be a seal or at least the seals on the bearings should be better as i get a lot of funk in there pretty easily.

hope that helps,

There is a large rubber o-ring between the hub body and the freewheel hub.

I have AM Classic hubs, front and rear. Last fall I had an engagement failure due to too thick of grease and low temps (I thought). I cleaned it out and went back to my old grease, problem was solved until...

Grease gets into the springs in the 3 engagement pins on the freehub body. The grease dampens the spring action and strenght, and the hub will not engage (spins both ways).

So, called AC and those guys are so much help. Told me to canx the grease and use oil in that area, and don't grease port the rear. Stretching the pin springs helps too.

Anyway, they now are using bearings sealed on both sides and are going away from the grease ports. If you want the double sealed bearings give them a call.

Hope that helps.
