| First ride with Crank Bros. Eggbeaters.... | eelpie Jan 17, 2002 6:46 AM | | Went for a short night ride on Tuesday to try out both my new Avid discs and the Eggbeaters. It was my first ride in a couple weeks and the Avids were not broken in, so it was far from a hammerfest, but I do have some initial thoughts.
First, with my Times (been using them for 2 years), invariably I would bang a pedal at least once; nothing major, just kinda annoying. With the EBs, this did not happen at all. I know the profile is only slightly smaller, but it seemed to help.
Entry: I found the easiest entry was the same way you clip into Times; pushing forward and down. Yeah, I could get into the EBs pushing flat or toe-up, but it didn't feel right or advantageous (perhaps because I'm used to clipping into the Times). Only occasionally did I have to try twice to find the "clip in" zone, and this will, of course, improve with familiarity.
Holding power: The EBs held as well or better than the Times...very secure, confidence inspiring to say the least. Liked the feel of the EBs very much.
Release: The left pedal released comparable to the Times; the right pedal took slightly more effort.
Float: Didn't really notice a difference, but the ride was only about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Overall, I'm very happy with the EBs; same performance as Times in a lighter, slimmer-profile package.
Unfortunately, I need more Time on them to see if they truly are a step up on the Times. Also, since I didn't bang em, don't know yet about short term or long term durability....hard to beat the Times in that category. |
| how do have the cleats set up? | db Jan 17, 2002 7:01 AM | | the dotted one on the left, or right? did you switch them around to see if there was any difference? |
| Set for beginner..... | eelpie Jan 17, 2002 7:11 AM | | can't remember which side the dot is on, but it's the side that allows for easiest in and out clipping. Didn't switch em around, because there wasn't really a problem with unclipping, though I didn't get into any really hairy situations (where it was unclip and bail time).
Sorry I couldn't be of more help (yet). |
| keep me posted........ | heff® Jan 17, 2002 7:55 AM | | ......if they're as good as they sound, I might get some.
My first clipless pedals were Times, still use them, but they're getting a bit beat. If the EggBeaters are that good, I'll get those instead of the Time Carbons.
Ride them Avids, buddy!!

| Will do Heff..... | eelpie Jan 17, 2002 8:19 AM | | I'm going out again tonight....gotta brake in those discs for some real riding! The front is pretty well on it's way to full break-in (I can lock it up) but the back is going slow.
I'll report back on the beaters after a couple more rides, but for now they seem to be the cat's butt!
One more thing...the EB cleat is as unimposing--if not more so--than that of the Times...no clacking when you walk on em and you don't even know they are there. |
| keep me posted........ | Rob Jan 17, 2002 1:01 PM | | I have been riding the EBs for about two months now. These are the most intuitive pedals I have used. Entering these is easier than any pedal I have tried (Time, Shimano) and the release is consistent, even in mud. These are the best by far. |
| re: First ride with Crank Bros. Eggbeaters.... | Steve S Jan 17, 2002 8:06 AM | | Not much of a platform on the EB's... Is that an issue. Does your foot rock around a lot???
Look forward to hearing more on the durability issues. |
| Ya know, that was a concern of mine up front.... | eelpie Jan 17, 2002 8:24 AM | | but it didn't seem to be an issue at all. I know this because I never even thought about it on the trail.
The only "drawback" was in finding the cleat-pedal interface on the first try sometimes (you know the deal, cleat misses rail, shoe slides forward past pedal, reload and try again)...and this is simply a matter of getting used to it (meaning I don't see any issues with this after a couple of rides...I went through this with the Times as well).
By the way, I was trying out a new pair of shoes too, which may or may not have contributed to the above. |
| BTW, this "trial" ride was a night ride. nm | eelpie Jan 17, 2002 8:26 AM | | nm |
| I have used them for two weeks now | matt Jan 17, 2002 8:33 AM | | I too went from time to egg beaters. As for the smaller platform, the egg beaters have a flat spot on both sides of the clips. Your foot makes very good contact there. I honestly can't tell a difference in the Time ATACS and eggbeaters. The only thing I have noticed at all was during a crash. As I tumbled with the bike, the pedal ate my shin up. The times have the smoothe edges that weren't so bad. I am totally pleased with the egg beaters. I got mine off eBay for $70 new, so I would have to give the edge to them just out of price. |
| Yeah, I can imagine that if you bark your shin... | eelpie Jan 17, 2002 9:00 AM | | on the EBs, watch out, because all of the impact force will be concentrated on one (or two) small bars as opposed to the big pedal body of the Times...this might cause more pain (same force over a smaller surface area means bigger yee-owtch!), but I've never had a problem banging my shins on clipless. |
