| Supergo $99 Mountain Frame | Daniel Jan 17, 2002 2:53 PM | | I called Supergo and asked whether their frame would need the headtube and the bottom bracket prepped. I did not get a definitive answer. I would like to buy it, and install the components myself. I can press the cups into the headtube. But if the headtube needs facing, that is another matter. Has anyone bought one of these frames? What was your experience?
THANKS

| Supergo frame build | Wecked Out Jan 17, 2002 3:08 PM | | I've built two bikes using the Access frame within the least 3 months. I did not have the BB threads chased or the headtube faced on either one. However, there was some "masking" material in the BB threads of one which I removed, very carefully with an exacto knife blade, before I threaded in the BB.
There is a sheet of instructions that comes with the frame that plainly states to have the threads chased etc. etc. In other words, if you screw it up... you are on your own! There was a poster 5-6 weeks ago that had that exact problem. I'd say it is do-able... but proceed with caution. If there isany doubt with the frame you get... take it in to the LBS.
I have a third frame hanging in the basement that looks clean and will install with out the "exacto" treatment. Good Luck!

| re: Supergo $99 Mountain Frame | mtc Jan 17, 2002 3:09 PM | | Man I know your trying to save a dime, but most frames require that kind of attention before assembly.
Considering your saving a couple hundred bucks on a compairable frame, pay the cash to have the headtube faced and the treads chased.
I work at a large bike shop and "all" our frames get the treads chased before being built. As for facing the headtube, the only maker we don't have to chase is Ibis, and we aren't moving many Ibis' these days.
As a side note, I've owned two Supergo frames and have sold(talked into) about 6 Access' and they've all been nice bikes, about %50 developed cracks in 3-6 years, but man at that price it was no problem.
At least face the HS and just clean the BB very well.

| what is"headtube facing" ??? and how do you do it? nm | airwreck Jan 17, 2002 11:14 PM | | "facing" is performed on both the headtube and BB shell. a cutting tool is used to shave metal from the outside edges(not inside) of the tube or shell to insure a perfectly square/flat/even/parallel edge surface. Uneven surfaces will result in a headset that binds in one spot and hasten wear of the bearings. "reaming" of the inside of the head tube is done to produce a perfect diameter fit for the cups. "Chasing" of the BB threads cleans paint and imperfections. If you happen upon a set of tools, take the time to practice on some old junk frames first. Eventually Calvin from Park Tool will reply with a more accurate description and link to their excellent web site. Eric |
| I built one up last week | Drummie Jan 17, 2002 6:57 PM | | and brought the frame in to our machine shop at work in case it needed any chasing, etc. The bottom bracket screwed right in (most of the way by hand only) and I had no problems with the headset either. Just a little grease on both and it worked out fine. For that price, I say, buy the thing and try the install without forcing things (messing up the threads). If you run into problems, take it to the LBS. For $99 I expected to have to do more work, but I was happy I didn't. |
| others to consider... | pedalinbob Jan 18, 2002 7:51 AM | | i have a nice "Wild West" steel frame from universal cycles--think i paid about $150. it is a rebadged KHS. nice bike, with good geometry, and fairly bulletproof. didnt need any special prep.
look around, you might find some good deals on lightly used frames.

| ...how does the frame ride? | Louie Jan 18, 2002 12:18 PM | | Most that I hear about these frames so far is "big ugly stickers" and "good deal". I know I shouldn't complain about a $99 frame, but how does it ride? Considering picking one up for the girlfriend. |
