| Sun Rhyno Lite metal shavings inside... | mtbrider Jan 17, 2002 3:00 PM | | I received my Sun Rhyno Lite xt disc wheel set and when you slowly spin the rear wheel it sounds like there are metal shavings moving around inside. Actually it sounds more like a bb rolling around inside but i'm sure it's only metal shavings. Has anyone else experienced this? I doubt that it affects the strength of the rim at all, but it sure is annoying. I don't know if i should just return and go with a different wheel set or deal with it. Maybe it will go away. |
| What you're hearing is... | clydsdal Jan 17, 2002 3:59 PM | | The metal shavings from the drilling of the spoke holes. I can't believe this would have any effect on the integrity of the rim, otherwise most every rim out there woould've failed at some point.
It is more likely to be an extra loose eyelet that got dropped in there during the making of the rim. No biggee, regardless, although the noise can be annoying. Later, RT |
| that, or whoever built it left... | Tom Collins Jan 17, 2002 6:07 PM | | an extra spoke nipple floating around in there. I'd just take off the rim tape, and shake it around until the nipple, or eyelet, or shaving falls out one of the now-exposed spoke holes. |
| That rim is a "problem child" for that issue. spray glue. | Bianchi4Me Jan 17, 2002 10:31 PM | | The RhynoLite design traps shavings because it is has a thinner center-section clearance than it does out at the edges. In effect, the "roof" is lower in the middle where the holes are. So what you can have happen is a drill shaving, cutting from when they trimmed the ends, eyelet, or whatever, will get trapped in the taller section near the edges. It's free to roll around out there in the taller edge area and make lots of noise, but it may be to big to fit into the shorter center section easily. So you can hear it rolling around in there, but you can't get the $*&@$ thing out. When I have noisy rims I blast them out with compressed air before I build with them, that usually gets a lot of the stuff out, but doesn't always clear up everything. You can try pulling the tire and tape and see if you can just shake it out. It that fails, take it to the nearest compressor and try blowing it out. If that fails, I'd live with it. You can't hear it when you are moving anyway. If it really, really bugs you, you can get some spray contact adhesive with a squirt nozzle, localize the area you think the rattle is in, and coat down the inside of the rim in that area with the glue. Let it sit with that area at the bottom 'til it dries. Hopefully, you will cement whatever the heck is bouncing around in there to the rim and silence it permanently. It's probably not a nipple, it would actually be kinda hard to get one to go into that rim like that. (But probably not impossible!) |
| That rim is a "problem child" for that issue. spray glue. | mtbrider Jan 18, 2002 5:28 AM | | The wheel is already built so the spoke holes have spokes in them. I don't feel it's worth rebuiding the wheel to solve the problem. Maybe after some riding time whatever is in there will get stuck some where and stop making noise.
Thanks for the input. |
| No, No, No, No... | Bianchi4Me Jan 18, 2002 7:33 PM | | Did you know that I was talking about the large holes on the inside of the rim? That's why I'm talking about removing the tire and rim tape. You are right that with the spokes/nips installed there is less clearance there than with an unbuilt wheel, but you may still be able to use the air blast method to remove debris from inside the rim. Certainly not discussing removing the spokes from the wheel to cure a rattle ;-> ... |
| I did that... | mtbrider Jan 19, 2002 7:04 AM | | that is, took the rim tape off and looked at the holes. The spoke tension pulls the rim together pretty tight. There is a little gap but not much. I ended up and returned them for another set. The noise and the fact that they came in the box with no packing what's so ever and were all scratched in certain areas. If the new set has the same noise i'll try the air pressure trick or spray adhesive.
Thanks again. |
| I did it.......... | heff® Jan 18, 2002 8:13 AM | | .....don't ask how.
Oh, I just started a part time job, I'll be ordering those wheels from you next month.

| I have to ask... | mtbrider Jan 18, 2002 11:25 AM | | If you got the metal shavings out, how did you do it? What wheels are you buying next month? |
| not metal shavings........... | heff® Jan 18, 2002 4:07 PM | | .....but I DID manage to get a nipple totally inside. Don't ask how. It's still in there, I did the spray adhesive thingy.
B4Me is gonna build me a set of American Classic disk hubs, Velocity rims, and one of three spokes I'm thinking of. I'll bow to his judgement on those, though. I like the DT SuperComps, but theres a couple more out there that might be better.
