| 5 best upgrades for Trek fuel 90 | MTB.'er Jan 17, 2002 5:47 PM | | Hey, I mainly want to lighten up my trek fuel 90 but I don't have the money for a complete xtr set. I want to know your opinion on what u think the top 5 upgrades would be for a trek fuel 90. So far I'm thinking......(and correst me if I'm wrong)....
1. Continental explorer pro tires
2. Easton monkey lite carbon fiber riser bars
3. Shimano xt hallowtech crankset
4. ??????
5. ??????
Thanks for all your advice:) |

4. Maybe an XT cassette
Don't forget to sell your old stuff on eBay to offset the cost |

"Upgrades" are never what they pretend to be. Don't fool yourself. If you need a better bike, then ditch the Fuel and get a better bike.
What part do you NEED to upgrade? Did something break? |

| re: 5 best upgrades for Trek fuel 90 | Fuel4U Jan 18, 2002 5:32 AM | | My advice would be ride it 'til stuff breaks/wears out, and THEN worry about replacing - lighter tires might be the easiest/cheapest upgrade to immediately drop some weight....but seriously, don't worry 'bout the weight, just get out and ride it........I've never seen so many people so anal about the weight of their bikes/parts......just ride it 'til ya NEED to replace, then upgrade to lighter stuff....otherwise, the question that begs to be asked, is, why didn't ya just buy the Fuel 100 in the first place ?? |
| re: 5 best upgrades for Trek fuel 90 | MTB.'er Jan 18, 2002 5:53 AM | | I have an old GT hardtail that NEEDS a new crankset so I was thinking, hey upgrade Trek and put old Trek crankset on GT. I didn't get the fuel 100 cuz I'm fourteen and my job probably doesn't pay as much as yours. Thanks for all the advice.
*IF for some reason I don't get a new crankset for a while, my present one is skipping the chain around on the front chainrings, any help woulds be nice:) |

From the sound of it, you don't NEED cranks. If the only problem is chain skipping - that sounds like a severly worn set of chainrings, the chain and probably the cassette. If the drivetrain on the GT is that far gone, a new set of cranks won't fix it. You'll wear the new 'rings out really quick if you don't change anything else. |
| not for weight but... | Jiggy Jan 18, 2002 6:35 AM | | ODI lock on grips. for weight- stem, seatpost, seat, pedals |
| 1" wide rear tire so that you can | Endoverend Jan 18, 2002 12:19 PM | | actually get some mud clearance. Just kidding of course, but man, those bikes have a riduculously minimal amount of clearance in the back! It is keeping me from even coming close to considering buying one...... |
| Change the Cranks to LX or XT Before they Fail........ | Joseph H Grier Jan 18, 2002 2:36 PM | | The Bontrager crank on the Trek Fuel 90 (or any Fuel) is the weakest link. You will save some weight and a headache in the long run if you change them out now. They are garbage. Might also consider an XT rear cassette for the best shifting response/performance. |
