Wierd Hayes Hydro disc Drag problem!!????help!mtbiac
Jan 17, 2002 5:48 PM
Here's the scenario: Giant AC Air 2001. Brief specs: psylo race, sid XC, hayes hydro 6" F/R, and all XTR/XT if i matters... Brakes are practically brand new!!! (shop installed but i have since replaced everything, cleaneed, etc...

I have tried literally, EVERYTHING to get rid of brake drag. Normally, i wouldnt care becuase it isnt noticable, but in this case IT IS! When i spin the wheel, it wont free=spin like it should, only for abotu 2-3sec before stopping from disc drag.

WHAT I TRIED....
1. Removing and replacing all brake components, thoroughly cleaning, tightening properly, etc.
2. Pushed pistons back in all the way
3. tightened pad springs a bit for firmer fir over piston pin
4. made sure disc is striaght as possible (its ALITTLE off center but i have never seen a disc that isnt...)
5. Tried the squeeze technique for mounting caliper
6. Tried mounting caliper manualy by eyeing the gap between pads and disc
7. Tried putting 1 and 2 business cards between each pad and disc, then doing the squeeze technique (used 1 card, then 2)

NONE OF THIS HAS WORKED, still get the same damn drag. I ride the bike after every test for like 10 min to get everything seated, but drag wont die!!

Maybe this is normal for a brake this new?? I had a problem similar to this on an older set of hayes, but i fixed it with one of the above methods.

The only other thing i can thing would be wrong is that i have tooo much Oil in the hydraulic system??? I can only move the lever 1in - 1.5in., but maybe if i remove some fluid i would get more pad to disc clearaance because the fluid isnt pusing the pistons out, and thus creating no drag??? or is this just a stupid idea?? I can move the lever ALL the way to the bar after just having pushed the pistons in, but on the next squeeze i get the same distance.... is this normal too??

PLEASE HELP!! Any suggestions would be sweet!!
Thanks,
Mike-
Same thing happened to me ......eayste

When I bought my Jeykll this past July .
Did nearly everything you did .
Then bled alittle fluid out .
re-centered the pads and..
the rub was gone .
Brakes work great after the break in period.
A break in period for brakes ? How ironic .:P
I suggest trying that.

I don't know if this is your problem or not but...
If it's draging on one side make sure that your wheel is in the dropouts correctly(flip the bike and install wheel) Next unscrew the blots that move the caliper and put locktight (mild) on the treads and screw back in and center caliper with you eyes (it's the best way) not by squeezing the brake.

That business card crap never worked for me either. Nor did "squeeze the brake and tighten." Here's what I do now for a virtually drag free set-up. Pull brake and lightly tighten bolts. Now look and see where it's dragging. Loosen ONE of the bolts and move the caliper in that direction just a little. Tighten back up and check. Continue this untill it is centered. If you can't move the caliper in the direction you need to, spacers may be needed between rotor and hub.
Hope this helps
