| Stripped shimano cleat bolt | jasonmb Jan 17, 2002 8:26 PM | | I knew it was a mistake to take new shoes on a trip, but its too late now.
I bought some Sidi Bullet MTB shoes and installed some spd cleats on them. On the ride today, depsite my best efforts to secure the cleats to my shoe, the cleat actually twisted to the right. I tried to loosen them to straighten the cleat out, but it was stripped.
Any thoughts on how to remove the rounded off bolts that hold the cleats to the shoes? My wrench sits and spins inside of it.

| drill out the bolts... | shiggy©® Jan 17, 2002 8:42 PM | | ...to remove the heads and remove the cleats. Then grab the bolt with a pair of vice grips and twist them out.
This has worked for me many times over the years. |
| more on drilling... | airwreck Jan 17, 2002 10:51 PM | | get some cobalt-penetrated drill bits, I got a set at sears, it's amazing how easy those bolts round, but how hard it is to drill them. The cobalt bits will make it alot easier. Eric |
| If you have a Dremel.... | Ventanarama Jan 17, 2002 10:05 PM | | cut a slot into the head of the bolt then use a big screwdriver to unscrew the bolt. Just did this yesterday in fact when I switched to Eggbeaters.

| I know they are already out, but in the future | Santa Cruz Jan 18, 2002 8:02 AM | | Sears makes a three bit set designed to back out stripped screws. I had the same issue with my Time cleats. They worked great. Caught the screw and backed out on the first try. |
